About this Position
The Senior Staff Engineer will report to the engineering cost-out leader, and is responsible for developing and owning the Sourced Parts, and Engine Controls, cost and producibility strategy for our Defense Engines portfolio. This is a senior-level role, which entails working with autonomy across a large matrixed organization, and interfacing with engineering, finance, sourcing/procurement, and strategy leaders.

The Cost Strategy Lead will own ideation, feasibility analysis, technical execution, and partner with the engineering cost org to resource projects. In addition, this role will own and participate in daily management, develop metrics, and participate in Gemba and supplier site visits.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Own and lead complex productivity projects throughout their lifecycle: ideation, feasibility disposition, execution, implementation/industrialization
  • Lead the program management strategy with KPIs, action plans, and problem solving in the cost/producibility space
  • Deployment of cost-out strategy for components across the engine
  • Develop and lead idea generation at both internal shops and OV facilities
  • Partner with engineering teams on design changes and technical analysis
  • The ability to travel up to 15% of the time
  • Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements. This work would include mechanical and/or electrical engineering for all products
  • Requires specialized knowledge within the function. Influence the development of strategy for the area of responsibility, including control of resources and influences policy formulation.
  • Interprets simple internal and external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve products, processes or services. Stays informed of industry trends that may inform work.
  • Uses high level of judgment to make decisions and handle complex tasks or problems in areas of operational, product management, manufacturing, technology or engineering. Has ability to assess quality of information given and ask pertinent questions to stakeholders. Able to offer new solutions to problems outside of set parameters and is able to construct and provide recommendations. Uses multiple internal and some external sources outside of own function to help arrive at a decision.
  • May lead functional teams or projects with minimal resource requirements, risk, and/or complexity. Communicates difficult concepts and may influence others' options on particular topics. May guide others to consider a different point of view.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or advanced degree in engineering from an accredited university or college
  • Minimum of 5 years of combined experience in design engineering, project management and cost strategy & execution
  • The ability to travel up to 15% of the time.

Desired Characteristics

  • Master's degree in Mechanical or Aerospace engineering from an accredited university or college
  • Minimum of 8 years of combined experience in design engineering, project management and cost strategy & execution
  • Experience with Lean and daily management
  • The ability to present complex technical and financial information to a VP+ level leadership team
  • Familiarity with shop costing, manufacturing finance, and the PO/procurement process
  • Background and experience in turbomachinery mechanical design
  • The ability to build relationships and influence a team outside of your reporting structure
  • Value Engineering and project management experience
  • Demonstrated ability to identify, analyze and resolve problems independently.
  • Ability to independently organize, document, plan and execute simultaneous projects while aligning with business priorities.
