Job Description Summary

The Counsel - Privacy and Digital Technology provides domain expertise in the areas of privacy and digital technology, demonstrating accountability for functional, business, and broad company objectives. Within this role you will report to the General Counsel, Global Security & Digital Technology and Chief Privacy Officer for the Aerospace business, partner with organizations across the Company and will directly provide legal support to the Digital Technology and business teams, drive compliance initiatives and contribute to the overall business strategy. This role requires an understanding of the legal challenges that arise in the fast-paced world of technology and IT infrastructure.

Job Description

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Provides legal guidance and advice on a variety of issues, including privacy, data protection, IT systems, cloud computing, data storage and emerging technologies.
  • Identifies and assesses legal risks related to IT projects, software development, and technology innovation.
  • Conducts Privacy Impact Assessments (PIAs) and risk assessments for new technologies, software systems, or operational processes that involve personal data or sensitive company data.
  • Leads the legal response of the investigation of privacy incidents, including identifying any legal or regulatory obligations, drafting and reviewing relevant communications and notifications, and providing counsel on response, remediation, and mitigation efforts.
  • Proactively defines and updates privacy and technology related policies, procedures, and processes for the business, determining the business impact and compliance strategies for new regulations related to privacy, data protection, and emerging technologies.
  • Partners with Government Affairs and Digital Technology teams on legislative issues and emerging regulations to provide advocacy within industry groups and before government entities.
  • Monitors compliance with relevant internal business and legal processes and policies, enforces existing rules and resolves privacy and data protection questions.
  • Reviews and negotiates privacy and data protection requirements related to customer and third-party contracts.
  • Partners closely with Human Resources and Digital Technology to ensure compliance with applicable law and regulations.
  • Acts with humility, leads with transparency, and delivers with focus.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctorate or equivalent degree from accredited university
  • Minimum 4 years as practicing attorney with experience handling privacy and technology issues
  • Member in good standing with the State Bar
  • Note: Military experience is equivalent to professional experience

Desired Characteristics:

  • Experience in-house or law firm strongly preferred.
  • Proactive and defined self-starter with superior communication skills.
  • Domain expertise in data privacy, technology, and compliance as well as experience advising on regulatory frameworks and risk management strategies.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams, including IT, compliance and executive leadership.
  • Familiarity with technologies, data protection protocols, and IT security frameworks.
  • Innovative, forward-thinking, and results-oriented with a passion to solve complex problems in a creative and pragmatic way and to translate laws and regulations into actionable policies and procedures that enable business objectives.
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and drive internal and external stakeholders to a decision in a matrix corporate environment.
  • Strong collaboration skills across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to make decisions that have deep impact.
  • Actively embraces new ways of thinking and practices that increase efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Communicates and demonstrates a shared sense of purpose. Learns from failure.
  • Privacy certification such as CIPP, CIPM, or CIPT desired.
