As a Research Engineer - Combustion, you will be a member of a world-class team that is focused on developing cutting-edge turbine engine combustion technology and advanced concepts for advanced air-breathing propulsion systems. You will perform research and development of combustion technology and systems that will support GE Aerospace and other partners such as the US Government.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

You will work in a team carrying out research and development of next generation combustion technology for low-emissions gas turbines and other high-speed air-breathing propulsion systems. In this role you will:

  • Work with technicians and engineers to design and install new experimental hardware
  • Perform high-pressure combustion experiments simulating engine operation and analyze data
  • Contribute to project reviews and archive results - recommend design improvements
  • Work with other engineers in developing new combustion models and analysis tools
  • Lead cutting edge research in turbine engine combustion and high-speed propulsion
  • Work as part of a team executing on multi-generation technology programs to enable future design advancements

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related disciplines OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related disciplines with at least 5 years of relevant experience
  • Knowledge of combustion, acoustics, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, and combustion chemistry
  • Experience with post-processing computational and/or experimental data
  • Background in advanced mathematics (numerical methods, pde/ode, etc.)
  • Experience in performing combustion experiments
  • Demonstrated ability to investigate, model and provide critical insight into complex physical phenomena
  • Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to interface with senior leaders and customers with clarity and confidence
  • Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY
  • U.S. citizenship is required due to Federal Contract Provisions

Desired Characteristics

  • Background in gas turbine combustion, including: thermo-acoustic instabilities (combustion dynamics), fuel/air premixing systems, flame propagation in complex fuel mixtures, combustion kinetics & chemistry, design and evaluation of new combustion systems, and modeling of combustion systems
  • Experience with advanced instrumentation and optical diagnostics
  • Experience in modeling supersonic/hypersonic flows
  • Peer reviewed journal publications
  • Experience working with high-pressure, high-temperature combustion experiments
  • Fluency with Matlab, Python, and COMSOL

The base pay range for this position is $80,000 - $150,000 USD Annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary/ commission based on the plan. This posting is expected to close on July 30st, 2025.
