Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
You will work in a team carrying out research and development of next generation combustion technology for low-emissions gas turbines and other high-speed air-breathing propulsion systems. In this role you will:
- Work with technicians and engineers to design and install new experimental hardware
- Perform high-pressure combustion experiments simulating engine operation and analyze data
- Contribute to project reviews and archive results - recommend design improvements
- Work with other engineers in developing new combustion models and analysis tools
- Lead cutting edge research in turbine engine combustion and high-speed propulsion
- Work as part of a team executing on multi-generation technology programs to enable future design advancements
Required Qualifications
- Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related disciplines OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering or related disciplines with at least 5 years of relevant experience
- Knowledge of combustion, acoustics, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics, and combustion chemistry
- Experience with post-processing computational and/or experimental data
- Background in advanced mathematics (numerical methods, pde/ode, etc.)
- Experience in performing combustion experiments
- Demonstrated ability to investigate, model and provide critical insight into complex physical phenomena
- Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team
- Excellent communication skills and ability to interface with senior leaders and customers with clarity and confidence
- Must be willing to work out of an office located in Niskayuna, NY
- U.S. citizenship is required due to Federal Contract Provisions
Desired Characteristics
- Background in gas turbine combustion, including: thermo-acoustic instabilities (combustion dynamics), fuel/air premixing systems, flame propagation in complex fuel mixtures, combustion kinetics & chemistry, design and evaluation of new combustion systems, and modeling of combustion systems
- Experience with advanced instrumentation and optical diagnostics
- Experience in modeling supersonic/hypersonic flows
- Peer reviewed journal publications
- Experience working with high-pressure, high-temperature combustion experiments
- Fluency with Matlab, Python, and COMSOL
The base pay range for this position is $80,000 - $150,000 USD Annually. The specific pay offered may be influenced by a variety of factors, including the candidate's experience, education, and skill set. This position is also eligible for an annual discretionary bonus based on a percentage of your base salary/ commission based on the plan. This posting is expected to close on July 30st, 2025.
