Job Description
The Platform Software group develops embedded software for a multitude of product areas at GE Aerospace across both civil and military markets including avionics computing and networking, flight management, vehicle health and data management, and mission systems. Platform Software includes items such as firmware, board support packages, boot loaders, integration of real-time operating systems (RTOS), and other services such as data loaders and built-in tests.
Role Summary:
The Lead Software Engineer (LSE) will be responsible for subject matter expertise (SME) for assigned product areas. They will provide technical oversight and guidance for their product area to successfully complete full-lifecycle embedded software development efforts through DO-178C certification.
Responsibilities:
In this role, you will focus on the following areas of responsibility:
Software Development
- Perform full lifecycle software development of embedded flight software to meet a set of system requirements
- Define software requirements and generate model-based design
- Develop and integrate source code on GE Aerospace's computing hardware
- Create tests to ensure the software meets its intended functionality
- Participate in software aspects of certification as required by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA)
- Provide status on progress and issues
Subject Matter Expertise
For assigned product area:
- Develop and maintain expert level of product knowledge and application
- Provide technical ownership of all aspects of the software product design and artifacts
- Coordinate with customers and internal project stakeholders including Systems, Hardware, Safety, Security, Quality, and Certification
- Provide technical guidance and oversight to other team members also working on same product area
Development Approach
- Demonstrate a behavior of continuous improvement with the goal of helping the business deliver on customer commitments
- Incorporate Product Line Engineering (PLE) practices to maximize reuse
Qualifications / Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline from an accredited university or college
- Minimum of 3 years of experience in computer software related technology and embedded real-time systems / software development
Desired Characteristics:
Education
- Master's degree in an Engineering related field from an accredited university or college
Technical Leadership
- Familiarity with Earned Value Management and Activity Based Management methods
- Familiarity with Agile Scrum
Process
- 5 years of experience with DO-178B/C avionics software development processes and certification standards
- Familiarity with DO-254, DO-297, and ARP-4754 certification standards
- Application of Product Line Engineering (PLE) principles and tools to manage software lifecycle artifacts
- Application of Lean practices in a software engineering environment
Technology
- Knowledge of processing platforms, network products, real-time operating systems, and multi-core processor architectures
- Demonstrated expertise with ARINC-653 integrated modular avionics (IMA) based operating systems

- Strong written and oral communication skills with keen ability to target communication to specific audiences
Up to 10% travel to customer, GE, and supplier sites may be required annually
The location for this position is Grand Rapids, MI on at least a hybrid basis (Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday in office)
