The Advanced Product Development Section is inventing the future of flight and advancing propulsion capability for the next generation of military applications. APD's focus is the design, integration, testing, and support of advanced technologies for new and derivative engine concepts. Technology areas include military inlet & exhaust systems, integrated propulsion power & thermal management systems, advanced material systems, and other breakthrough component and system technologies to support the future of military flight.

The APD - Mechanical Design Lead Engineer will contribute to the mechanical design and development of Edison Works New Product Introduction (NPI) as a Hardware Owner. This is a role for someone with a passion for engineering who understands the design process and digs in when confronted with a technical challenge. A Hardware Owner does not work alone and must have a strong affinity for teamwork and collaboration.

As a Hardware Owner in the Mechanical Design Subsection, you will be the focal for the maturation of high temperature engine components that integrate into a larger system. In this capacity you will exercise and develop core engineer skills including 3D modeling, finite element analysis, high cycle & low cycle fatigue assessments, mechanical stack-ups and drawing definition release. In addition, a Lead engineer is expected to coordinate cross-functional teams to establish boundary conditions, assess material and manufacturing capabilities, conduct design trades to optimize across a range of requirements, and understand the impact on project cost and schedule. Designs will be developed in support of future test and qualification efforts and the scope of the role will also include development of producibility and supportability strategies. As a Lead Engineer, you will drive design efforts with guidance from experienced Team Leads & Controlled Title Holders in a mission-based team environment. This position reports to an engineering manager in Evendale, OH with the opportunity to integrate with various internal & external engineering disciplines.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Execute the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects using sound engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.
  • This work will be largely mechanical design focused but require incorporation & trades for other advanced technology elements.
  • Under guidance of your Team Lead, use judgment and propose different solutions to address more complicated processes with technical variety and/or interdependent production cycles.
  • Use technical experience and analytical thinking.
  • Draw from multiple internal and limited external sources outside of own teams to arrive at decisions.
  • Leverage prior mechanical design experience and broaden knowledge of one's own technical discipline to meet product deliverables within schedule and budget constraints.
  • Demonstrate systems-thinking mentality to understand how work of one's team integrates with others to achieve product requirements.
  • Act as a focal for colleagues with less experience.
  • Lead small projects with determined risks and resource requirements.
  • Explain information & develop skills to bring team members to consensus around topics within field.
  • Adhere to business standards, practices, procedures, and product requirements.
  • Review designs and consult with senior technical leaders for evaluation of work.
  • Prepare and present technical data to internal and external customers.
  • Assure proper documentation of technical data generated for the assigned projects and/or tasks consistent with engineering policies and procedures.
  • This role requires sound interpersonal skills to develop strong internal and external customer relationships by serving as an interface point within GE.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited university or college.
  • Minimum of 3 additional years of experience in a relevant engineering position.
  • Must hold or have the ability to obtain a US Government Security Clearance at the Secret level.

Desired Characteristics

  • Current/existing US Government Security Clearance Demonstrated passion for engineering and exceptional communication skills.
  • Certification in or background with Material Review Board (MRB) engineering support.
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze & solve technical design challenges with sound documentation, planning, & program management skills.
  • Demonstrated track record of ability to work in a team environment.
  • Experience with finite element analysis software such as ANSYS and 3D modelling software such as NX Unigraphics.
  • Experience with structural component design.
  • Experience with engine/aircraft maintainability and reliability.
  • Experience with design quality assurance.
  • Experience working with DoD customer and processes.
  • Experience working in DoD EVM projects.

This role requires access to U.S. export-controlled information. If applicable, final offers will be contingent on ability to obtain authorization for access to U.S. export-controlled information from the U.S. Government.
