Job Description Summary

This position is for a lead engineer within the Aviation Engineering Division's Production Technologies (PT) organization. In this role you will own all engineering functions related to the production of rotating parts and compressor airfoils made by GE shops and external suppliers.

In this role, you will be on the front lines of an organization that is dedicated to improving the producibility of the rotating parts of the aircraft engines, enhancing the Engineering-Supply chain relationship to improve the delivery of products and this way fulfil our customers' expectations.

Examples of specific tasks you will be responsible for are: evaluation of nonconforming hardware that is in production, design changes for producibility improvement, on-going manufacturing support and strategic improvements on production related processes of the assigned hardware.

Job Description

The PT design engineer is responsible for the new make manufacturing of assigned parts. This includes building supplier relationships to improve producibility, reducing losses and scrap rates. These activities include on-site support and troubleshooting. The engineer will lead producibility improvements & cost reductions projects besides of collaboration with multidisciplinary teams on quality issues.

The PT design engineer will lead audits to make sure that parts are manufactured according to design intent, revive significant process substantiations, respond to supplier problem reports and will provide disposition to reports of nonconforming parts. Also, it will be responsible for building a relationship with the Life Cycle Engineer (LCE) hardware owner to share new or unusual manufacturing conditions, process changes, understand part field performance and manufacturing impact on part performance and Instructions for Continuous Airworthiness (ICA).

Essential Responsibilities

  • Coach and mentor others in the design, analysis, or evaluation of assigned projects, using engineering principles and adhering to business standards, practices, procedures, and product / program requirements.
  • Lead the solution of complex technical problems, monitoring their progress and quality and ensuring schedule requirements are met.
  • Monitor and communicate project status, business issues, and significant developments.
  • Utilize in-depth knowledge of engineering & manufacturing, analytical thinking, and technical experience to execute on technically complex projects to meet technical requirements and business goals with minimal technical oversight.
  • Use engineering judgement and experience to challenge entrenched processes and methodologies to recommend improvements.
  • Interact with engineers from multiple disciplines, manufacturing & quality, and regularly exposed to commodity and industry experts all while promoting open and honest dialogue.
  • Travel to manufacturing sites to gain practical knowledge of manufacturing, ensure parts are made according to design intent, discuss producibility issues and explore proposals of cost reduction.
  • Provide support to evaluate nonconforming hardware, producibility improvements, hardware delivery and vendor qualifications.

Requirements and Qualifications

  • Experience in design of aerospace components, especially on rotating parts and blades.
  • Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering, aerospace engineering, or a closely related engineering field.
  • Fundamental understanding of aerospace turbojet engines operation and turbomachinery system design.
  • Solid contribution as design engineer in previous job experience.
  • Capable of coaching others to accomplish assignments
  • Ability in managing projects across functions
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills in English language.
  • Proficient interpersonal and leadership skills.

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience in manufacturing, especially of aerospace components.
  • Experience on drawing interpretation, GD&T and stack-up analysis.
  • Experience on stress analysis with Ansys
  • Experience in CAD modeling with NX
  • Experience on life analysis of aerospace components.
  • Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field
  • Flexible and friendly approach to work in teams.
  • Passion for problem solving and driving solutions, while constantly learning and mentoring others.
