This position, which offers a blend of onsite and hybrid work arrangements, is based in Grand Rapids or Clearwater, FL and necessitates a presence in the office for 2-3 days each week. An extensive corporate relocation package is also available for eligible candidates.

Job Description

Position Overview:

The Embedded Software Engineer is a critical role within the aerospace industry, focusing on the design, development, and testing of embedded software (firmware). The role encompasses working on devices such as flight recorders, health monitoring systems, networking switches, which facilitate control and monitoring of critical physical components such as motors, alternators, engines, valves, and fans, among others through a secure digital communications infrastructure. The engineer must have a deep understanding of the hardware being controlled and the real-time functions it performs, enabling the design, development, implementation, and testing of the necessary logic and software.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and Development: Architect, design, and/or develop small modules or large components, features, or entire embedded software products. This includes understanding the needs of the hardware and ensuring the software meets these requirements.
  • Testing and Implementation: Responsible for the thorough testing of embedded software to ensure reliability and functionality. Implement software in a manner that is optimized for the specific hardware it controls.
  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Work closely with hardware engineers and other team members to ensure software and hardware compatibility. Participate in all phases of the design/development cycle, from concept to release.
  • Technical Expertise: Maintain and broaden knowledge in technical disciplines such as networks, operating systems, cybersecurity, databases, or applications. Apply this expertise to develop high-quality embedded software solutions.
  • Problem Solving: Resolve issues using good technical knowledge and judgment. Consult with more senior team members for complex problems outside of established procedures.

Technical Capabilities:

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C, or other similar high level languages (C++, Ada).
  • Experience with embedded software development tools and environments (e.g., debuggers, emulators, compilers).
  • Knowledge of hardware-software integration and experience with microcontrollers, microprocessors, and FPGA-based systems.
  • Familiarity with communication protocols (e.g., CAN, ARINC 429, MIL-STD-1553).
  • Understanding of software development lifecycle and methodologies (e.g., DO178C DALA, MIL-HDBK-516C Airworthiness for Airborne Systems, supported by Waterfall, Agile, V-Model methods).
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git, SVN).
  • Knowledge of signal processing and control systems can be beneficial.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college, or a high school diploma/GED with at least 6 years of experience in related fields.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of key business drivers and their impact on work.
