Wellness Audience Fellowship
USA TODAY is seeking a producer to focus on vertical video and social story telling for a 12-month fellowship on a grant-funded project focusing on youth mental health and caregivers.
This position will be part of a three-person team that covers topics such as youth mental health, women in caregiving roles and more from a solutions journalism perspective. This creative role will host and produce video content for social platforms (including TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube) that aim to bring USA TODAY's mental health reporting and coverage of caregivers to multi-platform audiences.Experience in data visualization or design isa big plus as this person may also be utilizedto enhance thedigitalpresentation of the stories the two reporting fellows write.

The perfect candidate for this role will be a social video native - someone who is both a consumer and a creator of vertical video dedicated to sharing news and information.
Along with working with the team to share through video storytelling, this person will identifytrending topics on social, find and interview sources and pitch content for our platforms.
We're looking for someone who can come up with thoughtful features and projectsand work with our team, and alsoreact quickly to the news with day-turnstories. An interest in Gen Z, Gen Alpha and the youth mental health crisis is a necessity.
The fellowship lasts one year and is full-time, 40 hours a week. The annual salary is $90,000.
Although the grant is expected to end after 12 months, sometimes additional funding can be obtained to extend a grant beyond the end date. If that would occur, your employment under the grant might also be extended.
The start date is flexible for the right candidate. This is a remote position, and candidates can be based in any state except for Alaska or Hawaii. This role is benefits eligible, and fellows will be able to enroll in Gannett's insurance, 401(k), and other benefit programs.
Responsibilities:
- Host and produce vertical videos around mental health and caregivers, partnering with wellness reporters to bring stories to audiences across social platforms.
- Generate mental health and caregiver-related video ideas, with an eye on explanatory journalism and trending topics across social media.
- Produce visuals that can be used in stories and on social to illustrate our reporting.
- Monitor social audience engagement, sharing feedback and metrics with the broader editorial team.
- Collaborate with audience team and cross-company journalists to identify new video storytelling opportunities.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master's in communications, journalism or related field preferred or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience is a huge plus, with consideration given to candidates with a relevant skill set and transferable experience.
- Proven video experience, with prior experience covering elections and political news.
- Comfortable in front of and behind the camera, with experience writing scripts, speaking, and shooting and editing video.
- Familiarity with vertical video distribution across social platforms, with a focus on TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.
- A solid understanding of social analytics, particularly when it comes to video engagement metrics.
- The ability to take big topics and themes and understand how to visualize them in ways that make them more accessible to audiences.
- The ability to think quickly and calmly during live and breaking news events.
- Ensures our coverage includes a diversity of ideas, perspectives, and voices.
