About the Role:

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Real Estate/Development Reporter to join our award-winning newsroom. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of the local real estate market, a passion for investigative reporting, and the ability to tell compelling stories that resonate with our readers.

Responsibilities:

  • Breaking News Coverage:
    • Quickly and accurately report on breaking news developments in the real estate and development sectors, including new projects, construction starts, sales, and market trends.
    • Attend public meetings, press conferences, and other events to gather information and build sources.
    • Develop and maintain strong relationships with key sources, including developers, real estate professionals, government officials, and community leaders.
  • Investigative Reporting:

  • Conduct in-depth investigations into complex real estate issues, such as affordable housing, environmental impacts, and the influence of money in development decisions.
  • Analyze data, public records, and other sources to uncover hidden stories and hold those in power accountable.
  • Produce well-researched and engaging long-form articles that shed light on important issues facing the community.
  • Enterprise Reporting:
    • Develop and execute original enterprise projects that explore the impact of development on the community, such as the changing face of neighborhoods, the environmental consequences of growth, and the challenges facing first-time homebuyers.
    • Identify and pursue unique story angles that provide valuable insights into the local real estate market.
  • Data Journalism:
    • Utilize data analysis and visualization techniques to tell compelling stories about real estate trends, market fluctuations, and the impact of development on the community.
    • Create interactive maps, charts, and other data-driven presentations to enhance reader engagement.
  • Digital Storytelling: *
    • Produce engaging content for all digital platforms, including the Herald-Tribune website, social media channels, and newsletters.
    • Utilize multimedia elements, such as photos, videos, and interactive graphics, to enhance storytelling.

  • Qualifications:

    • Bachelor's degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
    • At least 1-2 years of experience as a reporter, preferably with a focus on real estate, business, or government.
    • Strong understanding of the local real estate market and development trends.
    • Excellent writing, reporting, and investigative skills.
    • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
    • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
    • Proficiency in data analysis and visualization tools.
    • Experience with digital storytelling and content management systems.
