A balance of breaking news, crime and courts, and deep enterprise is essential to the beat.

Upstate South Carolina is a vibrant and growing region that includes Greenville, Spartanburg, and surrounding communities. It is a region full of untold stories waiting to be discovered and law enforcement agencies to cover. This reporter will be involved in other general breaking news or topics as needed, including but not limited to infrastructure failures, road construction, and the impact of growth on traffic.

Building trust in city, county, and state policing organizations to ensure timely and accurate communication of urgent and essential public safety information will be key. The idea journalist will be adept at source development, have experience using public records, databases, and other digital-focused tools, bring a rock-solid knowledge of AP style, and demonstrate a proven ability to meet daily and long-range deadlines. The right candidate will also have an eye for important details buried in local government agendas, and budgets. You should have work samples that show an aptitude for data-driven stories and familiarity with FOIA requests, and experience producing compelling, timely, well-sourced stories. We expect that you can recognize compelling, socially shareable stories and that you will be quick to jump on them. Previous public safety reporting and at least two years of experience at a daily newspaper or equivalent media are preferred.

The Greenville-Spartanburg area is home to the largest BMW production facility in the nation, an emerging tech community, and a robust tourism economy. We are located 90 minutes from Charlotte, North Carolina, 2.5 hours from Atlanta, and three hours from South Carolina's coastal beaches.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's or master's in communications, journalism, marketing, or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years or more of daily journalism experience in a digitally focused newsroom.
  • Strong news judgment and editing skills.
  • Comfort in fluid, fast-breaking, stressful situations.
  • Ability to identify story topics that will resonate with our audiences and execute them by delivering clear, complete news articles and video as appropriate.
  • Demonstrated ability to write stories from real-time digital updates to narratives to investigative reporting, employing alternative story forms and multimedia.
  • Strong grasp of journalism skills (reporting and editing) and advanced knowledge of writing, spelling, grammar, AP, and local style.
  • Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
  • Understanding of metrics, social media, and SEO strategy.
  • Demonstrated ability to use social media to augment news coverage and engage audiences on digital platforms.
  • Self-motivation and self-direction.
  • Command of media law and principles of ethical conduct.
  • Ability to multi-task and excel under deadline pressure, using time efficiently.
  • Skill at collaborating in a cross-functional environment and adapting in a rapidly changing industry.
  • Values diversity and inclusion and strives to lead a diverse team.
  • Is comfortable working with data and pursuing records requests.
  • Spanish language skills are a plus.
