The Asheville Citizen Times, an award-winning news organization in Western North Carolina, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, is seeking a full-time visual journalist, who is skilled in video, photography and social media to join our digital-first news team.
As the region recovers from the devastation wrought by Tropical Storm Helene - the worst natural disaster in WNC's history - we are seeking a journalist who can visually tell the stories of the people, the environment, the economy and the land with compassion, scrutiny and depth of understanding.
We want someone who understands the powerful role visuals storytelling plays in reaching new audiences and who is committed to high-quality journalism at every level.

Our visual journalists must be able to move seamlessly between high school sports, daily local news and deep investigations, community festivals and national entertainment events. The successful candidate must have the ability to collaborate with reporters and editors to produce compelling storytelling about the people and places of Asheville and Western North Carolina.
We are committed to building audiences in underserved communities and expect our visual journalists to cultivate contacts and create content that reflects these communities.
Responsibilities:
- Creates quality visual storytelling using photography, videography and text that informs, entertains and engages our audience.
- Experiments with video for YouTube, Instagram, TikTok and other emerging platforms.
- Experience using video editing software, such as Adobe Premiere, and comfort using streaming and audio technology.
- Uses audience metrics to assist in making coverage decisions.
- Collaborates and connects with the community through visual storytelling and outreach (social media, on camera, forums, community leadership, etc.)
- Works with editors and other journalists to evaluate what works and what doesn't and develops ongoing plans to satisfy audience needs.
- Projects include a mix of daily local news coverage and longer-term enterprise projects or series.
Requirements:
- Bachelor's or master's degree in communications, journalism, photography or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least two years of photojournalism experience in the high-pressured environment of a daily newspaper.
- Experience with multimedia storytelling techniques on multiple platforms.
- Exceptional core photojournalism skills (reporting, photography and videography).
- Ability to use basic and advanced computer programs, including but not limited to video editing software including Premiere Pro, Adobe Photoshop and Photo Mechanic
- Self-motivated and self-directed.
- Organizational skills.
- Understanding of social media and how to respond and engage fan base on digital platforms.
- Effective communicator; able to get along with diverse personalities.
- Able to multi-task and excel under intense deadline pressure in a rapidly changing environment.
- Ability to work collaboratively.
- Command of writing, spelling, grammar, AP style.
- Command of media law and Principles of Ethical Conduct.
