The Courier Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network, is seeking a college sports enterprise reporter with an emphasis on telling stories that help provide insight into the past, present and future for athletics programs at the University of Louisville and University of Kentucky.

The universities are home to two of the highest grossing programs in men's college basketball.This season, both programs will begin new eras with first-year head coaches during a pivotal time in college sports,where college football revenue has never been more important for the overall success of an athleticsdepartment and new rights granted to college athletes continue to drastically change how these departments are run and where money is invested.

As the landscape continues to change and sports culture continues to evolve, this reporter will take readers inside the programs and teams they care about most, identifyingand telling stories that will not be found anywhere else.

Sports are baked into the fabric of Louisville,and we need a journalist who has proven they can provide analysis, develop sourcesand tell stories that offer a deeper look atwhat'sahead for the programs that mean so much to people throughout Kentucky.

This reporter will beexpected to consistently produce unique stories that increase our reachand are a drivingforce behind people deciding to subscribeto our coverage. They will work closelywith our University of Louisville and University of Kentucky beatreporters, our columnist and sports director.

The ability to break news is critical, and this reporter must be able to develop strong sourcing. This journalist will be expected to use a variety of methods - including social media, video, audio and newsletters - to deliver and promote the stories they tell.

Key responsibilities:

  • Primary responsibilities will focus on enterprise work around the University of Louisville and University of Kentucky.
  • Assist with college beat coverage as needed and our coverage of major events, including the Kentucky Derby.
  • Be a curious, assertive and self-starting journalist who jumps to report on breaking news and trending topics with urgency.
  • Harness social media and messaging platforms as newsgathering tools.
  • Has a deep understanding of college sports audiences and knows how to use metrics and tools available to aid in story planning and strategy.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least two years of professional journalism experience, with experience on a major beat preferred.
  • An entrepreneurial approach to growing audience and a dedicated following.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent news judgment that's guided by experience and accounts for audience metrics.
  • Strong sense of journalism ethics and grounding in basics of media law.
  • Commitment to reporting with fairness, compassion and sensitivity.
  • Command of AP style and dedication to accuracy.
