Job Summary
To support production and troubleshoot activities on fully automated assembly lines for manufacturing, we're looking to add an Automation Engineer located in Austin, TX.
What a typical day looks like:
- Assist maintenance team to identify root cause of reoccurring issues and apply corrective actions
- Automation system debug - Hardware, Electrical, PLC, Robot, Vision
- Upgrades to system to enable processing of new part models, data tracking, performance improvements, machine uptime, etc.
- Update and add PLC code (Siemens) to support new models and prices changes
- Update machine vision program (Cognex) to support new models and process changes
- Update and create new robot programs (Mitsubishi) as needed to support new models and process changes
- Develop a project plan to work diligently towards finding the best solution for complex automation challenges
- Use 3D CAD software to review and design mechanical components and assemblies
- Design, build and troubleshoot functional prototypes of mechatronic systems incorporating compute, sensing, and actuation to explore feasibility of proposed solutions and inform the design of scalable systems
- Recommend best path forward to move from lab-scale prototype to scalable and deployable process
- Generate required documentation to capture final solution details and transfer knowledge to deployment partners
- MUST HAVE recycling knowledge, specifically of material interaction in industrial shredding operations
- BS or MS degree in Engineering (Mechatronics, Electrical, Automation, Robotics, or equivalent) with 5+ years of hands-on experience in mechatronics developing, prototyping, and applying automation, industrial controls systems, IoT, AI machine vision, and robotics into cohesive and innovative solutions
- Ability to program, test, and troubleshoot UL508A industrial automation systems (PLCs, HMI's, cabinet hardware, VFD's, starters, I/O, ladder logic) with oversight from customer Engineering team
- Ability to drive root cause/corrective action and process optimization activities to closure efficiently with proper design of experiment (DOE) practices
- Knowledge of MS Excel and Excel VBA along with familiarity with at least one programming language (i.e; Python, Java, C++, or similar)
- Ability to present findings with confidence, backed up by data, research, and prototyping results
- Knowledge of optics principles & Machine Vision as they relate to CCD cameras, 2D and 1D lasers, and their use for positioning and identification
- Working knowledge of robotics (6-axis and/or SCARA), pneumatics, servo motors, motion controllers, PLC and and PC-based control systems
- Basic experience with CAD, Design of Experiments fundamentals, and basic understanding of robotics and automation
- Working experience with mechanical fixturing and pneumatics
- Familiarity with process Design for Manufacturing and Mechanical drawings
- Experience designing, building & troubleshooting functional prototypes of mechatronic systems incorporating compute, sensing and actuation
