Position Overview

The Clinical Laboratory Intern position will provide an introduction to the daily operations of a commercial Histology laboratory to the candidate. The intern will be given an opportunity to collaborate closely with Histology Lab staff by supporting the daily operations of the Histology Laboratory as assigned and participate in quality assurance (QA) and/or process improvement (PI) activities to ensure inspection readiness, maintain operational excellence and improve scalability. The nature of the work requires excellent attention to detail and organizational skills, the ability to follow work instructions, policies, procedures and maintain stringent standards for quality, effective written and verbal communication skills, the ability to work independently in a team environment and be flexible with tasks and schedules.

Essential Duties

  • Support Histology on daily operations as assigned, for example:
    Manage and organize inventory of tissue samples (slides, tubes, blocks), specimen containers, lab supplies, documents, and records.
  • Deliver tissue samples and containers within and between departments.
  • Use laboratory equipment and/or Information System to support sample processing.
  • Prepare materials for customers.
  • Assist in the general upkeep of the laboratory, including but not limited to, maintaining sufficient inventory of material, supplies and equipment and cleaning glassware, racks, and other laboratory supplies.
  • Support management teams in Quality Assurance (QA) and/or Process Improvement (PI), activities as assigned, for example:
  • Assist in inspection preparation: e.g., internal document reviews, prepare or organize documents and records, mock audit, etc.
  • Participate in QA activities: e.g., compile data for key performance indicators (KPI), support root cause analysis, documentation of corrective and preventive actions, effectiveness check, etc.
  • Support PI projects: e.g., participate in or support workflow pilots or studies, research tools or technology, data collection and analysis, prepare documents and reports, etc.
  • Perform other duties, as necessary.
  • Uphold company mission and values through accountability, innovation, integrity, quality, and teamwork.
  • Support and comply with the company's Quality Management System policies and procedures.
  • Regular and reliable attendance.
  • Ability to work on a designated schedule.
  • Ability to work overtime as needed.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds for approximately 10% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work seated for approximately 60% of a typical working day. Ability to work standing for approximately 25% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to work on a mobile device, tablet, or in front of a computer screen and/or perform typing for approximately 60% of a typical working day.
  • Ability to grasp with both hands; pinch with thumb and forefinger; turn with hand/arm; reach above shoulder height.
  • Ability to work on a computer and phone simultaneously.
  • Ability to use a telephone through a headset.
  • Ability to comply with any applicable personal protective equipment requirements.
  • Considerable amount of time using various types of laboratory equipment including microscopes, microtomes, blades, strainers, pipettes.
  • May perform repetitious actions using lab tools.
  • Some time spent using near vision to view samples at close range.
  • Use of various chemicals may be used to perform duties.
  • At times, stress may be experienced.
  • Use of computers and some time may be spent concentrating, reading, or analyzing data, or applying scientific rules.
  • May be exposed to hazardous materials, tissue specimens and instruments with moving parts, lasers, heating and freezing elements, and high-speed centrifugation.
  • Ability and means to travel between Redwood City locations.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree program in science, life sciences, or field related to the essential duties.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform the essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • Authorization to work in the United States without sponsorship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with laboratory or production work environment
  • Experience maintaining inventory or resources in an organized manner.

Salary Range:
$39,000.00 - $62,000.00

The annual base salary shown is for this position located in US - CA - Redwood City on a full-time basis.
