The role:
The Senior Manager, Critical Facilities Engineering will oversee five critical sites (IBX) essential to our Australian operations, focusing on optimizing performance and maximizing resource value.
The South Sydney Campus (SSC) Senior Manager will set direction, anticipate change, and adapt to complexities to meet financial, service SLA, and safety expectations. The ideal candidate will be a value-centered leader who fosters collaboration and creates a positive work environment while developing teams to uphold Equinix's standards and protect our customers.
This role involves taking ownership of all onsite facilities functions, managing engineering teams, collaborating cross-functionally, and supporting the SSC Director. Strong communication skills, risk identification, and proactive planning are essential. Initially, the manager will focus on learning site infrastructure and Equinix processes. Extensive technical and engineering background, combined with exceptional leadership and financial acumen, is required for effective budget management and operational oversight.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership
- Direct Management of 5 x IBX supervisors (who leads the team of 20 + engineers) and is responsible for the 24/7 operational oversite and direction of the SSC encompassing both technical and engineering disciplines within the critical facilities operation.
- Articulates and drives the importance of working safely, effectively and with high regard to human error avoidance
- In absence of SSC Director will take on additional leadership and management tasks in relation to all operations
- Provides strategic guidance and direction to deliver Equinix priorities including SLA, Commit compliance, campus capacity management and IBX availability
- Forecasts operational training needs, development plans, and secures resources for deploying training to address those needs
- Inspires and operates high-performing team that is fully engaged and meets its goals and performs with accountability and integrity. This will include overseeing all performance reviews, improvement and development plans, recruitment and retention activities
Infrastructure, incident and Vendor Management
- Accountable for budget adherence, resource allocation and drives successful implementation of maintenance initiatives across the site
- Oversees vendor qualifications for inclusion into campus projects/activities
- Works cross-functionally with Equinix Engineering and Construction groups assisting with the design and implementation of data center projects
- Plays an integral role in relation to any future construction, fit-put project, planning and execution of works across the campus
- Collaborates with leaders on broad-scale Regional and Global projects that have an impact on the business, working with cross-functional teams, including Business Partners (Finance, IT, P&L) and general contractors
- Manages the teams to ensure completion to Equinix's required standards, KPI's and SLA's, communicates and coordinates activities and on-site staff during complex or severe customer-impacting incidents
- Drives root cause analysis and provides a clear direction for site teams, making recommendations for incident resolution and applies company resources to advance productivity and effectiveness
Operations Strategy and Financial Management
- Successfully manages/oversees the CAPEX and OPEX budgets.
- Establishes and manages budget for the site, including assessing areas of risk and proactively identifying and mitigating these risks
- Takes proactive approach to drafting proposals for datacenter infrastructure improvements which require capital expenditure approval.
- Encompasses support for company's strategic direction within IBX systems, policies, and procedures
- Builds collaborative relationships with our customer, and customer support teams
- Provides detailed routine status reports on Datacenter performance for key metrics
- Drives overall accountability, consistency and effectiveness across the Campus
Qualifications, skills and attributes:
- 10+ years of experience in Critical Environments, with a focus on leading, developing and optimizing engineering teams
- Demonstrated experience in Leadership / Management roles in multi-site capacity, including success in resource allocation and re-assignments
- Diploma/ Degree in Engineering or related industry field or relevant certifications and experience
- Deep understanding of critical environments and ability to establish themselves as technical lead for all site engineering
- Dedication to delivering a great customer experience, and possession of effective presentation, verbal and written communication skills
- Deep understanding of design documents, contracts, and technical information
- Overtly collaborative and team-oriented mindset for accomplishing complex goals
- High technical knowledge of computer software use (Microsoft applications & Email etc.)
- Demonstrated experience managing operational requirements and making targeted recommendations
