Senior Controls Engineer

The Senior Controls Engineer covers all datacenters in India and performs developed system maintenance. Effectively interacts with other internal and external teams, including the design engineering, site engineering, regional operations teams, onsite support vendors and consultants on projects, policies and procedures within a moderate scope.

Responsibilities

System Operations and Work Practices

  • Applies expert operating knowledge of control systems to conduct advanced diagnostics and repairs
  • Evaluates and ensures safe working practices of others
  • Interacts with other engineering disciplines
  • Utilize safe working practices at an expert level.
  • Evaluate and assure the safe working practices of others. Review and recommend work practice guidelines and policy.
  • Use data analysis including machine learning to optimize systems, increase energy efficiency and lower power usage
  • Provide logic and graphical programming for controls systems.

Problem Solving

  • Consistently solves complex, cross-functional issues requiring independent action and a high degree of initiative to resolve
  • Implements and makes recommendations for complex, system level enhancements to eliminate potential problems
  • Tests suitability of components for deployments on complex assignments
  • Investigates incidents and provide root cause analysis.
  • Troubleshoot all elements of the controls system, including field devices, controllers, network components and software systems.
  • Respond to emergency incidents on an as-needed basis.

Internal/External Contact

  • Leads small to medium projects, directing internal and external project team members
  • Provides expert/executive level communication to include cross-functional SOP development and relevant technical writing using standardized templates to exchange information between departments within the organization
  • Assist on-site IBX engineering personnel in working with local controls vendors.
  • Assist in managing the commissioning process, including test procedures, schedule, coordination and teaming with on-site IBX Ops Engineering personnel. Effectively communicate with major commissioning stakeholders.

Technical Expertise

  • Uses thorough understanding of advanced electrical, fire portections and HVAC systems operation including advanced optimization strategies and deficiencies to develop and execute projects
  • Tests suitability of components or actions plans for deployments

Training

  • Is a subject matter expert with many systems and trains others inside and outside of the group
  • Leads internal engineering training and seminars
  • Contributes to mentoring junior team members

Develop Policy/Methods

  • Participates in reviews of and contributes to developments of policit and procedure documents
  • Develop and update design standards for datacenter controls systems.
  • Assist with development, implementation and troubleshooting of SmartView, Equinix's Data Center Infrastructure Management system (DCIM).

Assess Adherence to Policy

  • Assures adherence to developed standards and policy through review of documentation, participation in commissioning activities and data center physicals
  • Review existing controls systems for single points of failure and provide suggestions for remediation.
  • Review controls design documents and submittal documents for data center construction.
  • Ensure "as-built" controls documentation is accurate and maintained.

Required Skills & Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering preferred.
  • Minimum of 10 years professional experience preferred in control system design, operations, maintenance, and project planning. Emphasis & special focus on controls.
  • Experience with data collection and conversion software such as Kepware, Matricon, TopView, OSISoft Pi or equivalent.
  • Must be conversant with direct digital control (DDC) systems, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), and Distributed Control Systems (DCS) debugging and programming.
  • Able to understand and implement control strategies and architecture using Sequence of Operation and P&ID drawings, SAMA diagrams or equivalent.
  • Must be able to understand control schemes for troubleshooting and optimizing operations.
  • Personnel shall be able to travel and will be on-call.
  • Must be able to use Microsoft Excel, Bluebeam, and Visio effectively.
  • Familiar with building codes and safety standards including UMC, NFPA, NEC.
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to compose technical and position papers for publication internal and external to the company.
