Head of UK Operations Engineering
Job Summary
The Head of UK Operations Engineering acts as the technical authority and leads the UK Operations Engineering team, ensuring operational excellence, and aligning engineering initiatives with business objectives. They shall be accountable for leading and managing a team of multidisciplinary professional engineers and subject matter experts who provide the requisite technical expertise to enable new and existing data centre infrastructure and assets are maintained to be safe, legal, and operable across the whole asset lifecycle; and that operational strategies deliver consistent, high-quality performance. They shall demonstrate personal and inspirational functional leadership, driving a continuous improvement culture in engineering and with our stakeholders.
Main Accountabilities
General
- Establishes operational objectives, policies, procedures and work plans and delegates assignments to subordinates.
- Develops, modifies, and executes company policies that affect immediate operations and may also have company-wide effect.
- Fiscal control of functional delivery within the assigned department budget.
Leadership
- Accountable for developing and leading a high performing, competent, capable, and engaged team.
- Accountable for developing talent, enabling career progression, ensuring their safety and wellbeing.
- Accountable for leading a team of experienced level professionals and indirectly responsible for subordinate managers and engineers.
- Accountable for ensuring team works safely, effectively and with high regard to human error avoidance.
- Manages personnel details including salaries, positioning, hire/fire, reviews, coaching and development.
- Leads in incident resolution.
Engineering
- Plans, coordinates, approves budgets, and implements resources to complete designs to support projects delivered by UK Operations Capital Programme.
- Undertakes design verification of the Global Design and Construction design and reviews project handover information and asset data.
- Provides technical expertise to support maintenance within the data centers.
- Overall site and/or multi-site capacity management.
Vendor Management
- Manages the team to ensure completion to Equinix's required standards, (KPI's) Key Performance Indicators and (SLA's) Service Level Agreements.
Testing
- Ensures correct processes are followed and all documentation is complete.
- Takeover of new builds and building infrastructure
- Approves all (MOP) Maintenance Operation Protocol scripts and permits.
- Participates as part of the new facility/infrastructure design team.
Incident Management
- Communicates and coordinates activities and on-site staff during a complex or severe customer-impacting incident.
- Drives root cause analysis and provides a clear direction.
- Drives approval for incident resolution.
Performance
- Establish and report on key performance metrics to continuously enhance engineering excellence.
- Drive innovation and operational improvements, support the mobilisation of resources, optimising maintenance strategies, and ensure the long-term reliability sustainability, and safety of our engineering systems.
Skills and Behaviours
- Strong senior leadership skills to lead and motivate a multidisciplinary professional engineering team.
- Extensive engineering experience in providing technical expertise support to operations.
- Proven ability to communicate and collaborate with people at all levels, and strong negotiating skills with an ability to build buy in to ideas and concepts.
- Proven ability to manage a programme of engineering design delivery.
- A passion for continuous professional development and active approach to driving diversity in engineering.
Qualifications
- Strong technical background in a critical industry operational environment.
- NVQ level 5 in an engineering/industry related field.
- Practical experience in either electrical, controls or mechanical systems.
- In depth knowledge of root cause analysis.
- In depth knowledge of CAFM systems.
- In depth knowledge of data centre infrastructure (Desirable)
- Bachelor's degree or equivalent (Desirable)
Experience
- Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of engineering delivery and maintenance in a complex, real-time operations environment.
- Experience of leadership within a critical industry
- Experience with CAFM systems.
- Experience of managing delivery of technical designs for new or modified assets and systems within existing operational infrastructure.
- Able to work cross functionally with both external and internal customers.
- Flexibility to travel to project sites as required.
- Project management experience (Desirable)
- Budget (OPEX/CAPEX) knowledge. (Desirable)
- Contract management experience (Desirable).
