Critical Data Canter Facility Engineer IV- Electrical Journeyman

Job Summary

Is a skilled specialist that works on assignments requiring considerable judgment. Focus is on tasks using specialized knowledge and journeyman-level expertise in electrical and mechanical systems. Has a deep understanding of standard operating procedures for critical facility maintenance and electrical safety. Supports the overall team.

Responsibilities

Facility / Infrastructure Maintenance

  • Performs specialized preventative and corrective maintenance on-site to critical facility electrical components and/or systems, including Uninterruptible Power Supplies (UPS), backup generators, Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS), Power Distribution Units (PDU), and other critical power infrastructure.
  • Performs moderately difficult repairs, maintenance, installations, and on-site inspections of critical facility electrical, HVAC, and mechanical systems.
  • Monitors the Building Monitoring System (BMS) and Power Monitoring System (PMS), resolves alarms, and assesses implications on system performance, following guidelines on standard procedures and making recommendations for solutions.
  • Operates and maintains plumbing, fire suppression, life-safety, and electrical distribution systems, including medium and low-voltage electrical distribution systems.
  • Implements energy efficiency measures, ensuring compliance with electrical safety and regulatory codes.
  • Assists team members with coordinating critical infrastructure changes, shutdowns, or upgrades to electrical systems.
  • Works on assignments requiring journeyman-level electrical knowledge, with a focus on recognizing implications of work on electrical safety and power redundancy.

Vendor Support

  • Coordinates and directs vendors on skilled electrical tasks, ensuring maintenance activities align with safety standards, electrical codes, and operational requirements.
  • Assists with the creation and submission of maintenance scripts, particularly those involving electrical equipment shutdowns or testing.
  • Tracks and implements work approval processes for service providers for critical electrical maintenance, including pre-task briefing, in-progress work control, and post-task review.
  • In collaboration with vendors, updates technical files, diagrams, and schematics for electrical plants and equipment to ensure accuracy.

Site Administration & Incident Support

  • Performs specialized data gathering and site logs for issuing permits (e.g., Maintenance Operation Protocols (MOPs)) with a focus on electrical work permits.
  • Identifies Single Points of Failure (SPOFs) in electrical systems and makes recommendations for solutions.
  • Responds to all on-site incidents, including failures, significant electrical issues, and delays affecting power continuity.
  • Performs Root Cause Analysis (RCA) on electrical incidents and provides recommendations for solutions.
  • Supports on-site staff during electrical and power-related incidents.
  • Ensures electrical processes and procedures are followed for safety and compliance.

Work Orders & Additional Projects

  • Completes skilled work requests, circuit installations, and complex electrical tasks following OSHA and NFPA 70E safety standards.
  • Performs advanced troubleshooting and maintenance of electrical distribution systems, UPS systems, generators, PDUs, and other critical power equipment.
  • Makes moderate changes and upgrades to mechanical, electrical, and other specialized systems, with a focus on compliance with electrical codes and safety regulations.
  • Supports life cycle maintenance/end-of-life electrical projects and critical replacements.
  • May recommend infrastructure projects focused on electrical system improvements or upgrades.

Collaboration

  • Collaborates with others to resolve complex electrical facility incidents, coordinating with internal teams and external vendors.
  • Mentors team members in skilled electrical maintenance activities, emphasizing safety, best practices, and code compliance.
  • Informs stakeholders of inventory needs, specifically for critical electrical parts and equipment, and may help coordinate stock processes.

Qualifications

  • 3+ years of experience in facilities engineering, electrical maintenance, or a similar role within a data center or critical infrastructure environment.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Journeyman-level electrical license preferred.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, NFPA 70E (Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace), and relevant electrical safety practices.
  • Experience with electrical systems such as UPS, PDU, generators, ATS, and BMS/PMS systems in a data center environment.
