Eaton's ES AMER ESS division is currently seeking a Utility P&C Technician II.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $91500.03 - $146,000 a year. This position requires ability to travel up to 100% of the time.

What you'll do:

The Utility P&C Technician II will be responsible for commissioning transmission and distribution substation additions or modifications and ensuring they are installed, function, and energized correctly. This role is also responsible for the coordination of all apparatus and relay testing activities, functional test activities and documentation of as-left/as-built station status (station prints and as-left relay settings).

In this position you will:

  • Work around energized "in-service" electrical equipment to perform testing and commissioning activities on reliability upgrades in energized "brownfield" transmission stations.
  • Develop isolation plans & procedures for the removal of existing equipment such as protective relays, relay panels, AC/DC panels, battery systems, breakers, transformers, SSVTs, CCVTs, PTs, CTs, linear couplers, etc.
  • Ability to communicate technical information to non-technical personnel, educate customers, and present information to internal and external customers.
  • Assist with all aspects of testing of substation devices and equipment, including but not limited to: reading / verifying all voltage and current inputs to relays and metering, trip testing , functional verification of all control systems, verification of all devices and equipment alarms, and other similar testing .
  • Identify and resolve design errors.
  • Provide administrative and technical support of field related substation testing and commissioning activities. Plan, perform, coordinate, and supervise on-site testing and commissioning activities (pre-commissioning, field testing , demonstration testing , energization, and post-energization) as required by project scope.
  • Provide field engineering support to the electricians in the wiring of the substation protective relaying and control system, verifying the wiring is full complete per the design drawings.
  • Provide commissioning oversight of substation installations, including developing check-out guides, reviewing/approving test results, developing equipment energization plans to minimize system risk, and providing final approval of equipment prior to release to transmission operations.
  • Develop on-site coordination of equipment, work plans, isolation (cut-over) plans, functional test plans, equipment lists, final documentation uploads, complete project binder, equipment energization lists, equipment energization notifications, and unintended incident notifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to apply engineering skills and operational knowledge in the identification and resolution of technical problems in the field during the installation phase and testing phase.
  • Directly witness or perform critical tests such as DC functional trip testing prior to energization and in-service.
  • Work variable hours, including nights & weekends, and travel in the Northeast and northeastern Midwest based on customer requirements.
  • Extended hours and consecutive workdays occasionally required during commissioning activities.

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Minimum 5 years of substation relay testing experience OR combination of 3+ years professional experience and relevant technical education/military experience
  • No relocation is provided - candidates must reside within the United States to be considered.
  • Possess and maintain a valid and unrestricted driver's license.
  • Submit to initial and periodic customer required background and drug screenings
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now or in the future

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Associates or Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering or engineering technology from an accredited institution and/or applicable military experience.
  • 7+ years of relevant substation field engineering experience.
  • Level 3 or 4 NETA or NICET certification.
  • Professional Engineering license

Skills:

  • Has demonstrated ability to provide service and represent company interests in developing customer relationships to assure long-term customer satisfaction.
  • Willingness and aptitude for training and mentoring technicians and other members of technical engineering team.
  • Transmission substation relay test experience.
  • Knowledge and practice of safety precautions related to working with electrical and electronic equipment.
  • Experience with relay testing software such as Enoserve (RTS) and Doble Protection Suite.
  • Experience with relay communication software such as SEL Compass, AcSELerator Quickset (SEL-5030), GE (Enervista Launchpad), RFL (Gard PRO), and other common industry software.
  • Knowledgeable with all aspects of the testing & operation of various protective relays and power meters, including all device types: microprocessor-based, solid state, and electro-mechanical.
  • Demonstrated relevant experience in substation field engineering services and technical support for the construction, testing, and commissioning of substation equipment up to and including 500kV - Must include but is not limited to; Protective Relays, Relay Panels, AC/DC Panels, Battery Systems, Breakers, Transformers, SSVTs, CCVTs, PTs, CTs, Linear Couples, etc. Including the development of isolation plans and procedures.
  • Ability to read drawings and understand various protection schemes and proper checkout techniques for the troubleshooting and correcting of non-working schemes.
  • Demonstrated ability in communicating technical information to non-technical personnel, educating customers, and presenting information to internal and external customers
