Eaton's IS AER FMC division is currently seeking a Senior Design Engineer for our Grand Rapids, MI site! Producing electro-mechanical actuation components since 1963, our Grand Rapids facility has just under 200 employees. It's a leading supplier of secondary flight control systems and components for commercial and business aircraft OEMs.

The expected annual salary range for this role is $83250.0 - $122100.0 a year.

What you'll do:

The Senior Design Engineer will perform modeling, packaging, detailing, and engineering analysis for electro-mechanical actuators and electrical controllers. This Engineer will assist in managing design workload between US and international designers and engineers for new program development, sustaining engineering, and other design data to be stored in the PLM system. You will drive process improvements to quality and efficiency in the organization regarding configuration management and PLM processes.

In this function you will:

  • Create engineering 3D CAD models for new products.
  • Generate layouts, drawings and sketches for fabrication of Engineering Development, prototypes, and components for testing.
  • Complete detail drawing packages for new products utilizing applicable government standards and industry standards, primarily ANSI Y14.5M-1994, MIL-STD-100, and Eaton Design Engineering Standards Manual.
  • Perform GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and basic engineering analysis to support DFM, DFA, DTC, FEA and weight controls on new designs.
  • Update current production drawing packages and 3D CAD models by writing and incorporating Engineering Change Orders (ECO's) utilizing manual drawing techniques as well as CAD. Submit revised CAD data to the Enovia CAD database and release for production.
  • Support Mechanical, Test, and Electrical Design groups in generating drawings and sketches for fabrication of Engineering Development, prototypes, and components for testing.
  • Work with designers at global locations licensing drawings, documents through ENOVIA database. Submit work packages using engineering work-orders, drawing/ECO markups.
  • Coordinate product design activities with little input from project/senior engineers in accordance with project or proposal schedules
  • Develop, maintain, and enforce configuration management and data management plans, policies, standards, directives, and procedures ensuring product configuration integrity are met for engineering documents, drawings, firmware, and software through all product lifecycle phases.
  • Facilitate and chair the Change Control Board (CCB) meetings to drive efficient and effective ECO execution.

Qualifications:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution. 10 years relevant experience in the design of mechanical components may be substituted in place of Bachelor's Degree.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience in the design of mechanical components.
  • Minimum of two (2) years' experience with Pro Engineer or higher utilizing advanced geometry creation methods.
  • Experience with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without company sponsorship now and in the future.
  • This position requires use of information or access to hardware which is subject to the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR). All applicants must be U.S. persons within the meaning of ITAR. ITAR defines a U.S. person as a U.S. Citizen, U.S. Permanent Resident (i.e. 'Green Card Holder'), Political Asylee, or Refugee.
  • Must reside within a 50 mile radius of Grand Rapids, MI. Active Duty military are exempt from the geographical requirement

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Five (5) years' experience in the design of mechanical components
  • Five (5) years' experience with Pro Engineer or higher utilizing advanced geometry creation methods
  • Three (3) years' experience in the design of actuation components related to the aerospace industry with an understanding of electro-mechanical design/functionality to include experience with calculating critical characteristics related gear design
  • Working knowledge of FEA (Failure Effects Analysis) and CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) and software programs used in their assessment (ANSYS)
  • Advanced user of Enovia 2012x or higher
  • Advanced experience with 3D CAD tools
  • DFSS green belt
  • Excellent understanding of ASME Y14 standards.
  • Excellent understanding of ITAR and EAR regulations
  • Emerging expert in Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing

Position Criteria:

  • Thorough understanding of aerospace manufacturing processes, tolerances, and materials/mechanics of materials
  • Working knowledge of machining, turning, grinding, heat treat operations, etc. and how these processes affect product design
  • Utilize "Design for Manufacturing" skills early and often in the design process
  • Knowledge of export control, ITAR, and classification processes
  • Knowledge of basic Microsoft and Microsoft Office applications
  • Knowledge of standard aerospace manufacturing processes and ability to design for product manufacturability
