Electrical Systems Test Specialist

Eaton's ES AMER PCS CA division is currently seeking a Electrical Systems Test Specialist. This role is located out of Burlington, Canada.

The primary function of this role is to perform hands-on tasks in the power distribution hardware lab to assemble, setup and perform electrical and thermal tests to demonstrate the Technical, Functional, Regulatory, Safety & Security requirements of new or existing switchboards, panelboards, motor control centers and other designs. Additionally, this role is expected to design and develop the test apparatus and methodology including options for test automation to speed, simplify and improve the safety of product testing.

The position is expected to continuously monitor the effectiveness of the lab's testing abilities, identify risks to its operational continuity and propose and implement new equipment purchases or existing equipment upgrades. Manage the selection, determination of suitability to task, sourcing, and calibration of the site's maintained calibrated test equipment.

The candidate for the role shall be capable of translating product standard test requirements from CSA/UL/FM/IEC into test methodologies that are relevant, accurate and repeatable.

The role is expected to support in developing Product Test Plans and formulate, document, publish and manage Product Test Reports to ensure compliance to our CSA Supervised Manufacturers' Testing for Certification Program (SMTC).

The position may also be called upon to provide support or direction on pre-shipment product functionality or product standard compliance testing at our manufacturing facilities.

Working with the product development team, the candidate will lead or direct every aspect of the Test design process starting from the point of product inception and following through to the point of manufacturing.

The future development path for this role is to take on lead certification engineering function working closely with CSA/UL and other standards agencies in managing all aspects of Eaton products certification and compliance.

The role additionally includes expectations to enhance/support test engineering processes across Canada.

What you'll do:

In this role, you will:

• Plan, assemble prototypes and execute functional and thermal tests for a variety of electrical distribution and control products.
• Taking a lead role in defining test programs, lab setup, and understanding Product Certification Testing process requirements with strong focus on safety.
• Taking a lead role in developing lab capabilities as the need arises to align with Eaton business growth model.
• Co-ordinating with Mechanical & Electrical team leads to prepare for testing.
• Creating and Maintaining an Engineering Test Documents Vault using the corporate life cycle management tool or local filing system.
• Developing and maintaining all testing equipment and test procedure Standard-Work and equipment lock out tag out documents.
• Contributing to developing testing sequence, work instructions or procedures for product testing such as relays, protective relays, etc.
• Actively participating to maintain Eaton's 5S Lean workplace and Safetyprograms.
• Creation of standard testing manuals for efficiency and repeatability.
• Providing training to new hires in lab safety and equipment use.
• Staying up to date with key standards and test techniques.
• Designing and constructing test fixtures if needed to enable reliable testing and data capture
• Analyzing test data using Excel formulas, macros and graphs, as well as 3rd party data logging/analysis software; publishing and presenting test reports.
• Collaborating with Manufacturing and Quality engineers in investigative testing.
• Managing timelines and test schedules; forecasting project expenses

Qualifications:

Basic (Must have) qualifications:

  • Associate degree or college diploma or BS or equivalent work experience with electrical systems with a strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on approach to electrical testing and test fixture development.
  • At least 3 years of experience in product testing with a broad portfolio of electrical system tests: dielectric (hi-pot, BIL, PD, tracking), environmental (humidity & temperature), temperature rise functional testing.
  • Familiarity with low and medium voltage power breaker, starters/MCCs and drives, and key components such as contactors, safety modules, power cable/bus, isolators, enclosures.
  • Ability to interpret UL and CSA standards for industrial controllers, safety, and lab management.
  • Ability to design and develop test processes or apparatus to validate product designs.
  • Familiar with the safe use of basic hand tools to perform prototyping assembly.
  • Familiar with thermocouple welding, DMM, usage, hardware troubleshooting, test fixture design and lab care.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Experience with CSA SMTC and UL DAP programs
  • P.Eng designation, or C.E.T. designation, or working towards one.

Skills:

  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to multi-task while maintaining a prioritized work schedule.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with experience writing and presenting test plans, test reports and work instructions.
  • Self-motivated, energetic, and capable of working in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision working alone or as part of a team taking direction.
  • Innovative thinker able to develop test programs for new product designs or improve existing process to help the corporation meet its overall goals.
  • Able to develop and maintain a cooperative rapport with other team members to ensure project progression and success.
  • Ability to achieve results, meet deadlines, and adjust to quickly changing priorities.
  • Ability to take initiative and drive results.
