You'll have a broad range of responsibilities and will own projects across the DoorDash organization that drive impact. You'll support teams working at the intersection of technological innovation, e-commerce, and multi-sided platform marketplaces. You'll counsel our first-in-class product, operations, engineering, compliance, and marketing teams - among others - on a range of issues including lending, credit, deposits, payments regulations, scheme rules, consumer protection, marketing, intellectual property, data privacy, and financial compliance (including KYC, AML, and financial partnership rules). You'll partner with experts inside and outside of the organization to facilitate, close, and implement partnerships with financial institutions and other fintech partners. You'll become an expert on our existing products and will partner with the business to problem-solve and help shape the development of new banking and financial products, services, partnerships and business lines that power local economies. (TL;DR: exciting stuff!)
You're excited about this opportunity because you will...
- Be integrated with product managers, operators, designers, researchers, analysts, engineers, and others to help them solve problems and achieve business objectives while minimizing risk.
- Provide solution-oriented advice, strategic vision, and legal direction to a wide variety of teams from the initial stages of project development to launch.
- Independently develop practical guidance on issues relating to banking, bank partnerships, payments regulations, scheme rules, consumer protection, marketing, intellectual property, data privacy, and financial compliance (including KYC, AML, and financial partnership rules).
- Oversee outside counsel on our large strategic deals to shepard those agreements through the deal lifecycle, provide business-focused legal advice on federal and state consumer financial laws, and ensure the requisite internal policies and processes are built.
- Work closely with other members of the legal team - across litigation, corporate, employment, and privacy - as well as our partner law firms to ensure your business partners receive holistic and effective legal guidance across disciplines.
- Serve as cross-functional connective tissue and help gain consensus across the non-legal teams you work with.
- Build playbooks and establish processes to help scale our advice as a legal team.
We're excited about you because...
- You have a business-first mentality, strong legal judgment, and the ability to make decisions in an ambiguous and fast-paced environment with imperfect information.
- You are skilled at managing a high volume of requests from a wide range of client teams and balancing competing priorities with limited direction.
- You have familiarity with deposits, credit, lending, earned wage access, and bank-related product counseling, including experience in a variety of banking regulations like UDAAP and Regs E, DD, W, and/or Z.
- You have experience working on bank partnerships, including how to effectively structure, draft, negotiate, and implement agreements with various financial institutions and partners.
- You have an understanding of financial services consumer protection laws and payments/card network industry rules and regulations, including BSA/AML and KYC requirements.
- You understand complicated areas of law and apply them to a complex business.
- You are a great communicator, capable of translating complex legal concepts into understandable, tactical guidance and then building consensus around it.
- You are committed to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive work environment and have prioritized participating in DEI initiatives in past roles.
- You have a philosophy that no task is too big or small and an interest in learning and growth.
- You are a self-starter; you're intrinsically motivated but also a good, collaborative teammate.
- You have interests/passions outside of work that are important to you.
- You have prior in-house experience.
- You have 8+ years legal experience in a law firm and/or in-house legal department.
- You have a JD & are admitted to any state bar.
Bonus Points
- Previous product counseling experience.
- Some familiarity with insurance, loyalty, and rewards.
- Experience in the financial tech industry (including banking-as-a-service and/or embedded finance) or the on-demand economy.
