The Design Safety position serves as a key technical safety resource for new Disneyland Resort projects. The position is responsible for providing prevention through design for guest and cast safety, regulatory compliance, safety assurance strategies, and hazard analysis input for the development, implementation, and sustainment phases for the designated project(s).

The Senior Safety Professional will report to Manager, Safety.

What You Will Do

Lead the design safety efforts from the feasibility phase through project completion in partnership with both internal clients and external contractors/general contractors.

 Safety Design Assist:

  • Partner with Facilities Asset Management (FAM), Architecture & Facilities Engineering (A&FE), and Walt Disney Imagineering (WDI) and consult design elements to provide applicable and acceptable risk mitigation methodologies for the Disneyland resort to consider throughout the design cycle. 
  • Investigate and propose innovative and practical safety solutions to meet the creative intent of the project while ensuring risk mitigation/minimization and safety/regulatory compliance.
  • Articulate, quantify and qualify safety requirements to the project team using applicable standards and regulations, safety data and statistics, historical data, benchmarking and risk analysis techniques.
  • Partner with Facility and Operations Services (FOS), Operations, and other Line of Business partners to identify applicable risk mitigations/risk expectations for individual use-cases.
  • Provide risk and hazard analysis and safety input at all phases of project design, representing all stakeholders and Disneyland Resort Safety.
  • Safety liaison for the Disneyland Resort, Operations Development, and FOS teams to facilitate partnering with specialist safety teams such as Ergonomics, Industrial Hygiene, Accessibility, etc.
  • Represent Disney Experiences (DX) and Worldwide Safety by identifying items that represent an unacceptable risk for the Company or significant deviation from established design standards and norms, and recommend elevation or present these items to the applicable Safety Review Teams.
  • Identify applicable Disney, Federal, State and local regulations and standards for the element under design.

Safety Design Assurance:

  • Assist FOS and Operations throughout the execution of a design through construction and acceptance to ensure that safety mitigations planned during designed are accurate, effective, applicable, current and represent the appropriate level of risk acceptance.
  • Provide Safety Assurance services for all stakeholders by participating in inspections, field reviews, acceptance tests and operational acceptance testing.
  • Provide consulting services to all stakeholders on design changes, field directed changes, design gaps and scope changes.
  • Safety Liaison for the affected park/land/venue to assist FOS and Operations Development teams to prepare for operation and maintenance execution.
  • Ensure partnership with other design safety individuals for consistency and alignment of hazard mitigations, risk analysis, and standards interpretation.

Required Qualifications & Skills

Here’s what you need to be successful at this job:

  • 5+ years of industrial safety and health experience, safety engineering, or related.
  • Proven experience in the project design review process, including an understanding of the “Safety by Design” concept.
  • Strong background reviewing and analyzing design drawings/packages and hazard analyses.
  • Knowledge of relevant regulatory and industry standards and best practices as well as internal company standards and business practices.
  • Self-driven and resourceful professional with the ability to solve problems outside area of expertise.
  • Demonstrated flexibility and ability to operate within an ambiguous and changing environment.
  • Ability to resolve conflicts and diffuse difficult situations.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Associate Safety Professional (ASP) or Certified Safety Professional (CSP) designation or Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI)
  • Design safety experience
  • Experience in safety of multi trade construction activities and construction safety industry/regulatory standards
  • Strong background in FOS and Operations tasks and utilization of common theme park facilities (registered attractions, quick services kitchens, playground, etc...)

Education

  • Bachelors Degree

Preferred Education

  • 4-year degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering, Construction Safety, Engineering, Architecture or related. 
  • Advanced degree in Occupational Safety, Safety Engineering, Construction Safety, Engineering, Architecture or related.

The hiring range for this position in California is $103,500.00-$138,800.00 per year. The base pay actually offered will take into account internal equity and also may vary depending on the candidate’s geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors. A bonus and/or long-term incentive units may be provided as part of the compensation package, in addition to the full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits, dependent on the level and position offered.
