About the Role & Team

Disney's Animals, Science, and Environment is looking for a Chemist II to support our animal aquatic habitats at Disney's Animal Kingdom Theme Park.

In this role you will collect and analyze samples to fulfill the USDA and AZA guidelines while also maintaining the show quality of all systems. While your primary focus will be Disney’s Animal Kingdom and Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge, you'll also partner with the Chemist at The Seas with Nemo & Friends Pavilion at Epcot. As a Chemist II, you'll work closely with Zoological Managers, Animal Keepers, Safety and Environmental teams, and Maintenance to ensure the water quality of animal habitats. This role will provide you with opportunities to collaborate with and provide chemistry support for other departments’ water habitat related projects and systems.

This is a full-time, salaried role, reporting to the Chemist Manager.

What You Will Do

  • Collect and complete the water chemistry analyses for all Disney's Animal Kingdom life support systems
  • Provide data interpretation of all water chemistry parameters pertinent to each aquatic habitat
  • Complete accurate repair, maintenance, and calibration on all analytical instrumentation and probes
  • Coordinate the department’s Chemist schedules
  • Lead the Disney's Animal Kingdom Water Chemistry Laboratory, which includes ordering and organizing chemicals and other related materials
  • Ensure all data is collected and recorded accurately and in an orderly fashion
  • Be on call 24/7 for filtration system failures, water quality emergencies or for any chemistry assistance for Animal Husbandry

Required Qualifications & Skills

  • 1+ years’ experience in water chemistry lab
  • Ability to operate and have experience on the following laboratory equipment: UV/VIS Spectrophotometers, pH analyzers, multi-parameter portable probes, TOC Analyzer, Ion Chromatograph, and HPLC
  • In depth chemistry knowledge base on the major analytical equipment and techniques for water chemistry analyses
  • Basic understanding in fluid hydraulics and engineering
  • Strong investigation and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient computer software skills with the Microsoft Office system
  • Ability to perform basic to more sophisticated analytical chemistry calculations
  • Understanding of disinfection methods including ozone, chlorine, bromine, and UV
  • Budgeting experience for laboratory supplies
  • Proficient in scheduling projects and meetings
  • Solid understanding of life support system design and function
  • Knowledge of microbiology and immunology
  • Ability to lift and carry a minimum of 50lbs
  • Able to communicate technical concepts in clear and understandable terms
  • Ability to balance multiple projects
  • Available to work extended hours/shifts as required supporting Animal Health and system readiness
  • A valid Driver’s License and personal, reliable transportation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in microbiology
  • Understanding of control systems and software systems
  • Management experience in Water Chemistry
  • Forklift Certification

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in chemistry or chemistry related major
