Barley, Malt and Sorghum are the principal raw materials used in the manufacture of beer and East African Maltings Limited has the strategic role of providing competitively priced brewing raw materials to meet EABL supply requirements.

East African Maltings intent is to support both EABL strategic activities, protect the quality of our brands, support innovation and creation of competitive advantage for the EABL group within the Eastern African Region.

This role works closely with the EAML Site Manager, External Sites Manager, Production, Stores, Finance and other support functions at EAML.

The role is based at an external site which is a third-party contractor engaged to receive grain from the farms, process, store and dispatch onward to final customer. The role champions the speedy Barley/Sorghum analysis and grading, drying and segregation, space creation, fumigation, and transfers to ensure that Barley/Sorghum supplied to EAML in full (Quantity & Quality) and in a timely manner in order to meet the production and sales requirements.

Purpose of Role

The role is expected to deliver seamless and efficient intake, processing, storage and dispatch of Barley/Sorghum by providing timely and reliable Lab analysis, daily monitoring of stored grain quality, processing inventory and managing dispatch for any inter-site transfers or sales.

The role also works closely with the third-party contractor in ensuring all agreed performance metrics are achieved consistently.

Top 3-5 Accountabilities
  • Ex- Farm Barley/Sorghum sampling, analysis and segregation by region, variety, grade, and moisture content paying close attention to rejection and acceptance criteria of the material and Storage silo allocation as per criteria.


  • The role carries out analysis by physical / chemical/visual checks to ensure that delivered material is of the required standard, carry out Barley size grading for supplier payments and communicate results to relevant people.


  • Stored Barley/Sorghum handling, Quality control and assurance while in storage. Advice on suitability of barley for the next processing stage and maintain processing schedule for stored barley and work order issue to LGHL for cleaning and grading, fumigation and/or rotation.


  • Timely processing of delivery documents to facilitate farmer payments in SAP both on the Stores and Quality Management modules.


  • Ensure Implementation of Food safety, Quality, Environment and Safety Management Systems according to FSSC 22000, ISO 9001, ISO14001 and ISO45001 requirements respectively

Qualifications and Experience Required
  • Degree in food science & technology or Degree in Biochemistry or Chemistry.
  • Minimum of 3 years' experience in an operational role in the Food or Drink or Manufacturing sector, ideally in Malting or Brewing /engineering/quality.

The role holder should be:
  • Able to collaborate.
  • Honest,
  • Computer literate,
  • Have knowledge of various food analytical skills, and
  • Team player.
