Global Food Safety and Quality Strategy & Standards Manager

Purpose of the Role

This role is responsible for Quality strategy and standards management for Diageo Global Supply for all products in all markets. The role holder is a member of the Global Governance Leadership Team and will be a member of Global Crisis Management teams where required.

The Global Quality Strategy and Standards Manager has responsibility for setting the policies, standards and best practice in Quality, including Food Safety. The role is instrumental in Diageo's journey to become the most trusted and most respected consumer goods company in the world.

The Global Quality Strategy and Standards Manager leads a team of quality specialists who execute Diageo's Quality Standards and Food Safety programmes. The Global Quality Strategy and Standards Manager partners with the Global Governance Team and global Quality, Regulatory and Risk and Assurance Managers and their teams to standardise processes to assure Product Integrity. The primary focus will be the creation of a one Diageo set of policies, standards, ways of working and practices ensuring their deployment and implementation in Categories.

The prime function of this role is to provide Quality and Food Safety leadership and guidance to drive the end-to-end performance and ensure Diageo brands and reputation are protected.

Key Accountabilities
  • Lead the Quality Strategy, Standards and Food Safety programme for Diageo.
  • Ensure that Diageo's Quality Strategy is appropriate, current and leading within the food and beverage industry.
  • Lead Diageo's certification programme to FSSC22000 and be the primary point of contact for Diageo's Head Office operations for FSSC22000 certification.
  • Lead the management of the Quality and Food Safety risk mitigation plan for Diageo.
  • Identify risks and create mitigation plans for Product Integrity including food safety. Lead the management of the Diageo global product integrity testing programme.
  • Lead the structure, creation and implementation of Quality Standards across Diageo, ensuring that they are industry-leading and appropriate.
  • Establish and implement a Quality and Food Safety Culture plan for Diageo.
  • Lead Diageo's sensory proficiency process for beer and spirits.
  • Define the Global Quality 5-year roadmap to place Diageo in leading performance.
  • Define appropriate leading and lagging KPIs for Quality and Food Safety.
  • Establish processes to ensure standardisation and codification of Quality and Food Safety standards across all markets.
  • Manage the global community of Quality professionals across all markets to ensure that industry appropriate global standards are developed and implemented consistently.
  • Continuous External Benchmarking focusing on trends/efficiencies within quality to drive performance in processes and finished product quality.
  • Provide expert Quality and Food Safety input into projects to support Diageo's innovation and sustainability agenda.


Capabilities, Skills & Experience Required
  • Degree in relevant Technical or Science subject such as Biochemistry / Microbiology / Chemistry / Food Technology.
  • Knowledge and technical expertise in beers and spirits essential.
  • Extensive Quality management experience within the drinks industry and manufacturing (Manufacturing Excellence lens desirable).
  • Quality professional with experience at global level of leading Quality and Food Safety Management systems
  • ISO9000 / FSSC22000 Lead Auditor and HACCP qualifications an advantage
  • Thought leadership/ Strategic vision/ externally connected/ future-orientated.
  • Track record in delivery and strategy/ thought leadership.
  • Good interpersonal and influencing skills. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with and influence stakeholders throughout the organization.
  • Approachable and able to provide clear and concise information.
  • Track record and experience in the management of Food Safety
  • Desirable - Six Sigma Principles
  • Cross functional experience beneficial with strong supplier and procurement knowledge
  • Awareness of BCP and risk management techniques
  • Fully aware and of Health & Safety requirements and role models these standards each and every day.
  • Must be a team player with proven interpersonal skills. High energy, strong work ethic with demonstrated ability to lead by example.
  • Demonstrated engagement, presentation and influencing skills for large operations
