We are looking for a talented VPI Product Engineer - Fuel Pump Development Engineering to join our team specializing in Engineering for Cummins, Inc. in Columbus, IN.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Investigate Product Problems : Understand causal mechanisms, recommend actions, own problem resolution, and document results with guidance from experienced team members.
- Execute Technical Processes : Work in Product Preceding Technology (PPT), Value Package Introduction (VPI) or Current Product Support (CPS) business processes, using tools like Engineering Standard Work (ESW), iDFMEA, Failure Incident Review Group (FIRG), 7-step problem solving, and design review checklists.
- Stakeholder Collaboration : Obtain input from technical managers, project leaders, engineers, and supplier partners to deliver quality product decisions.
- Decision Making : Apply academic knowledge and experience to make decisions that progress projects without sacrificing quality.
- Problem Resolution : Own problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, systems, or services, with increasing technical complexity and ambiguity as experience grows.
- Independent Execution : Execute established work processes and systems independently while developing technology or product knowledge and improving systems and processes.
- Coordination and Direction : Coordinate and direct work among technicians and/or temporary student employees, with minimal direct management of people.
- Team Collaboration : Contribute effectively to team goals, influence within the work group, and develop proficiency in critical competency areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
- Product Development Execution, Monitoring and Control - Develop detailed project plans and schedules. Use project management tools to track progress and ensure all activities align with the project requirements. Identify potential risks early and develop mitigation strategies. Maintain clear and consistent communication across different teams.Gain a deep understanding of the product lifecycle and the needs of various stakeholders.
- Product Function Modeling, Simulation and Analysis - Leverage modeling and simulation tools to predict product performance. This can help in making data-driven design decisions.Develop strong skills in interpreting simulation results to understand how they impact the overall product design.
- Product Problem Solving - Use a systematic approach to identify and solve product issues. Protect the customer by ensuring solutions are robust and data driven.Focus on identifying the root causes of problems and implement actions to prevent recurrence.
- System Requirements Engineering - Use appropriate methods to translate stakeholder needs into clear, verifiable requirements. Keep track of requirements throughout the system lifecycle.Maintain strong linkages between requirements and related artifacts.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience:
- College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
- Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
- This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
- Entry level/Early career professional. Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area. Knowledge of MS Office tools is also preferred.

CC01 Senior VPI Product Engineer position in Fuel Pump Development Engineering...which is part of Fuel Systems Engineering in the Cummins Components & Software Business.
Fuel Pump Development Engineering provides Product Design and Product Validation Engineering leadership/support for Cummins Fuel Systems VPI and PPT programs. Our mission is to design and develop new fuel pump components and assemblies that meet or exceed customer expectations; completing Design, Development, and Release tasks on time and at the lowest possible cost.
Specific responsibilities for this position are summarized below.
Lead VPI Product Design Engineering activities
- Creo layouts, DVAs, ALD, Engineering Drawings, DQRs, E/D/L/P Design Reviews, Deviations/EJRs
- Lead/support the development and publication of Build Standard(s)
- Inspection Standards for in-house manufactured components
- Complete Design Engineering activities in accordance with Design Review process and VPI program technical schedules
Lead VPI Product Validation Engineering activities
- iDFMEAs in CTRs and Recommended Actions documented in DVP&Rs
- ESW required tasks documented in DVP&Rs
- DVP&Rs in Windchill RV&S; evidence plans/records for AD&V and EV&V tasks
- Test Hardware tracking in Pump Development Engineering Team OneNote
- Document build info, Test results, and post-test analysis results in PAL Database
Lead technical problem-solving activities for VPI product failures
- Document failures and abnormal observations from AD&V and EV&V tasks as incidents in McParts or RV&S
- Lead early problem-solving activities to define failure modes
- Initiate/coordinate step3 actions to protect customers
- Lead technical problem-solving activities; support problem solving activities led by other functions
- Follow the 7-step problem solving process and use key tools (i.e. FTA, RCA)
- Document problem solving activities in Windchill RV&S
- Present efficient/effective updates during FIRG meetings and other forums (e.g. Engr Roundtable)
Provide technical support (not leadership) for VPI Manufacturing/Assembly and Purchasing/SQIE activities.
- Review and disposition non-conforming material reports from Source Releases, PPAP activities, etc.
- Expedite acceptance of dimensional non-conformances via Deviations
- Support VPI Builds via active participation in Change Matrix process
Be a team player
Contribute to the success of the Pump Development Engineering Team, PPT/VPI Teams, FS Engineering, FSBU, Cummins Inc, and the community.
- Regular attendance and active participation in Tech Team meetings
- Lead Tech Team Meetings
- Regular 1:1 meetings with Supervisor (minimum 30 minutes every other week)
- Timely completion of assigned training in CLC, TMS activities, and time entry in T3 system
- Regular attendance and active participation in Fuel Pump Development team meetings
- Work at least 40% (experienced employees) or 60% (new employees) of normal work week in the FSP Office
- Participation in Fuel Systems Right Environment activities
- Participation in EEEC activity

This position is classified as Hybrid. Candidates are expected to live within a commutable distance from Columbus Fuel Systems Plant (FSP) and work at least 40% (experienced employees) or 60% (new employees) of the normal work week in the FSP office.
Relevant Product Engineering experience in Current Product Engineering or VPI Product Design/Development Engineering at Cummins Inc. is preferred.
