DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Product Systems Design Engineer to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins Inc. facility in Henderson, CO.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Optimizing Design Concepts : Apply your knowledge of engineering principles to create design concepts and specifications that balance application, cost, weight, performance, reliability, durability, manufacturing, assembly, and serviceability.
  • Effective Communication : Clearly communicate the capability of design concepts to meet cross-functional requirements, including assessing alternative and competitive designs.
  • Problem Resolution : Investigate and resolve Value Package Introduction (VPI) program or field-based issues, understanding causal mechanisms and recommending appropriate actions with guidance from experienced team members.
  • Process Execution : Support and execute processes such as Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation Checklists, and Design Reviews, using tools like iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, and ANSYS Workbench.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration : Obtain input and negotiate with cross-functional and cross-discipline experts to communicate design intent through comprehensive Design Review packages.
  • Design Decision Making : Support decision-making in concept selection, optimization, and specification development, impacting customers served by PPT, VPI, or VPCR initiatives.
  • Independent Execution : Execute established work processes and systems independently while developing your technology and product knowledge, contributing to system and process improvements.
  • Team Contribution : Contribute effectively to team goals, influence within your work group, and continue to develop proficiency in critical competency areas, potentially coordinating work among technicians or temporary student employees.

Your role will be crucial in ensuring high-quality design decisions and resolving product issues, ultimately enhancing the overall product development process.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role, you will need the following:

  • Cross-Functional Design Integration : Translate value package requirements from various stakeholders into virtual designs and effectively communicate these through cross-functional design reviews.
  • Mechanical Design Modeling and Analysis : Create CAD models that adhere to standards, enabling system-level analyses such as Dimensional Variation Analysis and Finite Element Analysis.
  • Mechanical Design of Mechanical Systems : Apply a deep understanding of mechanical systems to create innovative and robust design concepts that meet customer expectations across different operating environments.
  • Mechanical Design Specification : Develop comprehensive specifications, including solid models and detailed drawings, that clearly communicate manufacturing and inspection requirements in line with various standards.
  • Product Function Modeling, Simulation, and Analysis : Utilize computational tools to predict and analyze product functionality, influencing design decisions to meet system, sub-system, and component requirements.
  • Product Platform Planning and Architecting : Create holistic product platforms with key architectural features, perform trade-off analyses, and ensure alignment with market plans and stakeholder requirements.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

Bachelor's degree in an appropriate STEM field, or equivalent experience, is required.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

Entry level/Early career professional. Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area. Knowledge of MS Office and CREO tools is also preferred

QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Information:

  • Onsite Work Requirement : This is a hybrid role but it will require an onsite presence about 50% of the workweek. The primary work location is Henderson, Colorado.
  • 3D CAD Design and Layout : Primarily using Creo/Windchill, with SolidWorks as a secondary tool.
  • 2D Drawings and Schematics : Create 2D drawings, layouts, and schematics from 3D CAD models, markups, and sketches.
  • Material Selection and Drawing Revisions : Select appropriate materials and make necessary drawing changes.
  • Subsystem Sizing : Size air intake, cooling airflow, exhaust, and other engine subsystems to meet Cummins requirements.
  • Bill of Materials Creation : Generate bills of materials for release to the Cummins business system.
  • Design Calculations : Perform and gather information for system design calculations.
  • Collaboration with Engineering Firms : Work with external engineering firms to obtain certified/stamped designs.
  • Vendor and Customer Communication : Verify design calculations and customer specifications through communication with vendors and customers.
  • Manufacturing Support : Assist manufacturing with technical issues under staff direction.
  • Additional Duties : Perform other assigned duties as needed.
