Product Systems Design Engineer

DESCRIPTION

Although the role category specified in the GPP is Hybrid, the requirement is for Onsite.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Investigate Value Package Introduction (VPI) program or field-based issues, identify causal mechanisms, recommend solutions, and document results under the guidance of senior team members.
  • Support the execution of design processes, including Critical Design Decisions, System Design and Validation Considerations, Design Reviews, and tools like iDFMEA, DVA, GD&T, CREO, and ANSYS Workbench.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to develop design concepts and ensure they meet corporate and customer requirements.
  • Participate in design decision-making, concept optimization, and specification creation, considering customer needs and lifecycle requirements.
  • Own problem resolution for moderately complex components, products, and systems, while gradually taking on more responsibility as experience is gained.
  • Coordinate and direct work among technicians or student employees to assist in product development.
  • Contribute to team goals and improve work processes and systems to enhance design quality.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Qualifications & Competencies:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in an appropriate STEM field (Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, or related disciplines). Equivalent work experience will be considered.
  • Licensing: May require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
  • Experience: 3-5 years of relevant work experience, including internships or co-op programs in mechanical design or related technical disciplines.
  • Preferred Tools: Knowledge of MS Office, CREO, ANSYS Workbench, and CAD design tools.

Competencies:

  • Cross-Functional Design Integration: Ability to translate stakeholder requirements into virtual designs and communicate design capabilities through cross-functional reviews.
  • Mechanical Design Modeling and Analysis: Experience in creating CAD models and conducting system-level analyses (e.g., Dimensional Variation Analysis, Finite Element Analysis).
  • Mechanical System Design: In-depth understanding of mechanical systems to create innovative and robust design concepts meeting lifecycle requirements.
  • Product Problem Solving: Proficient in identifying and resolving product issues using data-driven solutions, ensuring product reliability and performance.
  • Collaborative Communication: Ability to build partnerships across teams and effectively communicate with diverse audiences.
  • Decision Quality: Skilled at making timely, data-backed decisions that keep projects on track.
  • Product Configuration and Change Management: Experience with configuration management, tracking product changes, and maintaining system integrity throughout the lifecycle.
  • Systems Thinking: Expertise in defining system requirements, analyzing interactions, and applying systems models to improve design outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS

Skills:

  • Design & Analysis Tools: Proficiency with CREO, ANSYS Workbench, and other mechanical design tools.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong analytical skills to troubleshoot and resolve complex product issues.
  • Communication: Effective written and verbal communication to interact with stakeholders, technical experts, and team members.
  • Project Management: Ability to plan, coordinate, and execute tasks while ensuring that product specifications and timelines are met.

Experience Needed:

  • 3-5 years of relevant experience, ideally in a technical role related to mechanical design or product development.
  • Hands-on experience in automotive or drivetrain product design, including knowledge of GD&T, tolerance stack-up analysis, and DFMEA.
  • Experience in working with cross-functional teams to drive design solutions and solve complex engineering problems.
  • Exposure to the full product lifecycle, from initial design to post-launch field reliability and support.

Key Areas of Focus:

  • Product Life Cycle Management: Engage in all phases of the product life cycle, from design to manufacturing and post-launch support.
  • Customer & Manufacturing Support: Provide engineering support for customer applications and manufacturing processes to ensure product performance and reliability.
  • Design for Excellence: Apply engineering best practices to create designs that meet quality standards, cost constraints, and performance objectives.
