DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Powertrain and Electrification Controls - Technical Specialist to join our Cummins Tech Center team in Columbus, IN.

The Research and Technology organization is seeking candidates to advance the state of the art in electrified powertrains for the commercial vehicle industry.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Problem Solving and Resolution : Investigate electronic application and systems problems, understand causal mechanisms, recommend appropriate actions, and document results, driving effective solutions.
  • Process Improvement : Apply and enhance electronic application and systems development processes and tools, ensuring system specification, modeling, simulation, calibration, and troubleshooting are optimized.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration : Gather and integrate input from customers, technical and product teams, manufacturing engineers, supplier partners, and other stakeholders to make informed and quality product decisions.
  • Design and Decision Making : Make critical decisions regarding electronic and electrical system design, requirements, calibration, and testing, impacting the quality and performance of subsystems.
  • Mentorship and Review : Review work of less-experienced developers and testers to ensure robust, reusable, and efficient designs, while providing guidance and mentorship.
  • Project Leadership : Lead smaller business impact projects or manage complex components, products, systems, or services with accountability, supporting project team success.
  • Work Process Development : Lead the development and improvement of work processes and systems within a functional discipline area, enhancing efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Team Coordination and Knowledge Transfer : Coordinate work among technicians and temporary student employees, and assist in the transfer of knowledge to less experienced engineers, fostering team growth and expertise.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role, you will need the following:

  • Expertise in Mechatronics Systems Design : Specify and apply electronic hardware and interconnections to measure and control systems within Cummins' products.
  • Proficiency in Machine Integration and Optimization : Combine various parts or sub-systems into a cohesive whole, ensuring optimal performance, reliability, cost, and quality through proven problem-solving and troubleshooting techniques.
  • Skill in Product Function Modeling and Analysis : Utilize computational tools to predict product capabilities and impact design decisions at system, sub-system, and component levels.
  • Strong Product Problem Solving Abilities : Protect the customer by determining root causes, implementing robust data-based solutions, and preventing problem recurrence.
  • Competence in Product Verification and Validation Management : Develop validation plans, manage product risks, negotiate requirements, and assess capabilities to support sound product decisions.
  • Systems Requirements Engineering Mastery : Translate stakeholder needs into verifiable requirements, establish acceptance criteria, track status through the lifecycle, and manage the impact of changes on project scope, schedule, and resources.
  • Systems Thinking Capability : Defines the system of interest, analyzes linkages and interactions between elements, and predicts system behavior to produce desired effects.

These skills will enable you to navigate the complexities of this role and drive successful outcomes for Cummins' electronic and electrical systems.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.

Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making. Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.

QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Information:

  • Bachelor's degrees with a minimum 5 years experience, or Masters with minimum 3 years experience or PhD within Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering preferred.
  • This is a Hybrid role with the expectation of 40% on-site presence.
  • Lead control system development for one or more Product Proceeding Technology (PPT) projects, including coordination of project plans, resources, and handoff material.
  • Define control methodologies and processes to establish best practices for powertrain and electrification controls.
  • Define the technical direction for powertrain and electrification systems and controls across multiple R&T projects.
  • Champion continuous improvement in processes and tools for systems and controls development.
  • Lead analysis and controls development of next-generation electrified powertrains, including concept development, controls and powertrain architecture entitlement studies, detailed model development and validation, performance and emission studies, hardware-in-loop (HIL) tests, and demonstrations.
  • Expertise in advanced control methodologies, simulation-based controls development, and verification and validation in test cells and test vehicles.
  • Excellent coding and simulation skills (Matlab and Simulink preferred) and good understanding of powertrain components and system integration, testing, and debugging (hardware in the loop, test cell, and test vehicles).
  • High level of analytical ability and systematic approach towards new problems, with prior experience leading control algorithm or system development for a small project or a subset of a large project.
  • Investigate electronic application and systems problems, recommend appropriate actions, and own problem resolution while documenting results.
  • Lead the development and improvement of work processes and systems across functional disciplines and provide independent leadership on smaller business impact projects.
  • Coordinate and direct work among technicians and temporary student employees, assist in knowledge transfer to less experienced engineers, and influence technical direction within project teams.
  • Previous controls analysis and design, Matlab/Simulink, System Simulation, Series/Parallel/BEV powertrain system and component simulation experience preferred.
