Model Machine Safety Engineer - Technical Advisor

DESCRIPTION

The Model Machine Safety Engineer - Technical Advisor provides machine safety expertise to Cummins plants globally. This role ensures compliance with safety standards, leads risk assessments, and develops internal safety guidelines. The incumbent collaborates with cross-functional teams, provides training, and supports capital projects to enhance machine safety across manufacturing operations.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conduct risk assessments, safety verifications, validations, machine safety inspections, and system design reviews.
  • Evaluate machinery safety functions, including control systems (electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, automation/controllers) and schematics.
  • Develop and implement machinery safety work processes, specifications, maintenance and inspection programs, and compliance documentation.
  • Serve as the technical lead and Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Machine Safety in capital projects and plant improvement initiatives.
  • Assist in applying engineering controls to mitigate risks in machines and equipment.
  • Review new safety regulations and corporate policies, ensuring compliance across all Cummins locations.
  • Lead and participate in root cause analyses and incident investigations related to machine safety.
  • Drive the implementation of machine safety system improvements across Cummins businesses.
  • Manage external consultants and service providers for safety system assessments, design, and validations.
  • Support training programs and provide expert guidance on machine safety processes and best practices.
  • Optimize safety function components and standardize machine safeguarding solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Must-Have Competencies:

  • Strong technical knowledge of automation and control systems.
  • Certification as a Functional Safety Engineer (CSME or TÜV Certified Functional Safety Engineer).
  • Experience using SISTEMA safety integrity software.
  • Expertise in conducting machine safety risk assessments and safety function evaluations.
  • Knowledge of functional safety standards, including:
  • ISO 13849-1, ISO 13849-2
  • IEC 62061
  • ISO 12100
  • Ability to perform safety system verification and validation.
  • Proficiency in reading electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic schematics.
  • Understanding of the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
  • Strong knowledge of electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic controls.
  • Familiarity with safety-rated machine safeguarding products, including safety interlocks, sensors, relays, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs).
  • Experience in commissioning and troubleshooting safety functions and control system interfaces.

Nice-to-Have Skills:

  • Basic understanding of EU Machinery Directive and CE marking requirements.
  • Knowledge of the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations (PUWER).
  • Experience in developing safety-related processes and procedures.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education, Licenses, and Certifications:

  • Required: Bachelor's degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) or equivalent experience.
  • Preferred: Advanced degree or additional certifications in Machine Safety, Functional Safety, or related fields.

Experience Required:

  • Extensive experience in machine safety engineering, manufacturing plant safety, or related fields.
  • Proven track record of leading large-scale safety projects and initiatives.
