DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Materials Science Engineering Technical Specialist to join our Cummins Drivetrain and Braking Systems (CBDS) team onsite in Troy, MI.

This position involves cross-functional collaboration on projects, providing expertise in material and process selection, failure analysis, material characterization, and addressing manufacturing and quality issues.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Applies Principles of Statistical Methods : Utilize statistical analysis and modeling to make data-driven decisions, ensuring rigorous and accurate outcomes.
  • Component Failure Analysis : Conduct thorough failure analyses to identify root causes and recommend corrective actions, enhancing product reliability and customer satisfaction.
  • Component Material and Process Selection : Evaluate and select optimal materials and processes, validating them through testing to meet component requirements and ensure quality.
  • Material Characterization : Perform detailed material characterization to confirm compliance and robustness, correlating lab results with field performance.
  • Technical Documentation : Document and communicate technical information effectively, facilitating knowledge transfer and improving technical productivity.
  • Builds Networks : Develop and maintain strong relationships within and outside the organization, fostering collaboration and support.
  • Communicates Effectively : Deliver clear and tailored communications to various audiences, ensuring understanding and alignment.
  • Problem Solving : Apply systematic problem-solving techniques to address issues, mentor others, and implement robust solutions to prevent recurrence.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Technical Expertise : Proficiency in material characterization, testing, and analysis techniques, including SEM and microscopy, as well as a thorough understanding of manufacturing processes like casting, forging, and heat treatment.
  • Problem-Solving Skills : Ability to lead investigations, identify root causes of material and processing issues, and recommend effective resolutions and process improvements.
  • Project Leadership : Experience in independently managing projects or complex components, providing guidance and mentorship to less experienced engineers, and coordinating work among team members.
  • Effective Communication : Strong skills in documenting technical findings, delivering presentations, and negotiating with various stakeholders to ensure successful material and process solutions.
  • Hands-On Experience : Practical experience with metallurgical sectioning, sample preparation, and analysis equipment, along with the ability to perform field and test fracture analysis on components.
  • Mentor and support other materials engineers.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science.
  • This position is for a fracture analysis expert with extensive knowledge of steels, ductile iron, heat treatment, and manufacturing.
  • Capable of supporting US Government applications.
  • Requires report writing skills and ability to lead meetings.
  • Minimum 5 years of metallurgical experience in relevant processes.
  • Capable to lift 50 lbs.
  • Onsite role with 5% domestic travel.

Please note that the salary range provided is a good faith estimate on the applicable range. The final salary offer will be determined after considering relevant factors, including a candidate's qualifications and experience, where appropriate.
