DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Field Test Technician to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins Inc. facility in Troy, MI.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

Facilitates selection of fleets and vehicles to fulfill Cummins Drivetrain and Braking Systems product field test needs.

Arranges and performs installation of prototype and production hardware.

Conducts regular evaluations/inspections of field test hardware, verifies duty cycles and vehicle maintenance records, and reports product performance results.

Transforms generally stated project test plans and needs into specific field test installation and tracking procedures.

This field test specialist is expected to perform well without supervision and travel frequently.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

Data Acquisition - Prepares samples, verifies equipment calibration and performs tests according to an approved standard procedure or work instruction in a manner which ensures, and results in, data that can be trusted and delivered to the engineer or customer.

Data Reporting - Prepares documentation in a manner which clearly organizes and presents testing methods, instrument settings, the data and analysis to allow the engineer and customer to understand the results and form accurate conclusions and recommendations.

Product Function Test System Design - Interprets test equipment specifications from test standards or lab customer requirements; selects and integrates appropriate equipment, instrumentation and software to control boundary conditions and collect measurement data; assesses capability of the lab equipment against the requirements and support infrastructure.

Test Setup and Configuration - Interprets test plan to determine optimal location and orientation within a test space in accordance with local safety and environmental requirements and fabricates required system with appropriate materials.

Test Article Build - Assembles test articles according to test requirements, including all necessary installation or accommodations for instrumentation, in a manner that allows the test articles to successfully undergo product functional test.

Preventative and Predictive Maintenance - Interprets machine and tool maintenance records and data to develop and execute preventative and predictive management strategies to drive continuous improvement within the manufacturing process.

Data Quality - Identifies, understands and corrects flaws in data that supports effective information governance across operational business processes and decision making.

Problem Solving - Solves problems and may mentor others on effective problem solving by using a systematic analysis process by leveraging industry standard methodologies to create problem traceability and protect the customer; determines the assignable cause; implements robust, data-based solutions; identifies the systemic root causes and ensures actions to prevent problem reoccurrence are implemented.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education or equivalent experience in an appropriate STEM field is required.

Regionally applicable certification or two year Associates Degree from an accredited college or university in a relevant field of study may be required.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

Requires some work experience and intermediate level knowledge obtained through education, training or on-the-job experience.

QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Requirements:

Mechanical skills with tools, vehicle repair, and/or test equipment.

Commercial vehicle product and fleet experience would be ideal.

Excellent computer, organizational, and interpersonal skills.

Ability to travel frequently.

CDL is preferred.

Additional Information

Standard Hours : 7:00 AM - 3:30 PM onsite in Troy, MI.

Customer Site Hours : May vary depending on the site.

50% Travel : Schedules can vary, and overtime is common when traveling to customer sites. This flexibility and willingness to adapt to different schedules will be key to your success in this role.

Hands-On Experience : You'll gain practical experience by working directly with vehicle setup, configuration and builds.

Mentorship : Experienced colleagues will guide you through complex tasks and share their expertise.

  • Estimate manpower needs and schedule installations and evaluations to meet plan/commitment.
  • Provide technical direction on company components being evaluated to professionals, mechanics and drivers as required.
  • Identify and organize fleet test support material requirements effectively.
  • Able to improvise and to adeptly handle unexpected complications.
  • Maintain timely effective liaison with various internal and external functions/organizations.
  • Discern, document, and communicate significant vehicle/product performance results.
  • Establish terms and conditions for field tests that are mutually beneficial to CDBS and the test fleets.
  • Maintain disciplined system for selecting fleets that optimizes field test cost-benefit results.
  • Complete assignments effectively and assists others when required.
  • Identify and correct unsafe conditions.
  • Properly store/inventories and identifies parts and tools.
  • Maintains records on work performed, analyze information and report results.
  • Maintains good housekeeping, safety practices and supplies.
