In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Problem-Solving : Investigating and resolving software issues, understanding the root causes, and documenting the outcomes to ensure continuous product improvement.

  • Process Leadership : Driving the development and improvement of work processes and systems within a global business unit or across business units.
  • Team Coordination : Reviewing the work of less-experienced developers and testers to ensure the creation of robust, reusable, and efficient designs. Directing and coordinating work among technicians and student employees and transferring knowledge to less experienced engineers.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role you will need the following:

  • Product Function Modeling, Simulation and Analysis - Utilize computational tools to model and simulate product functions, influencing design decisions and ensuring they meet system requirements.
  • Product Software Design and Construction - Construct product software with adherence to industry best practices and robust engineering principles, guaranteeing high-quality updates and products.
  • Product Verification and Validation Management - Create validation plans to identify failure modes and manage product risks, while also negotiating product requirements to guide project scope effectively.
  • Communicates effectively - Developing and delivering multi-mode communications that convey a clear understanding of the unique needs of different audiences.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education/Experience

  • College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
  • Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
  • Prior Senior or Lead Engineer equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving and quality decision making.
  • Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.

Overview

This position will be part of the Advanced Engineering & Innovation Group within the Cummins Drivetrain & Braking System division. As a Braking Software Controls Engineering Specialist your primary focus will be on design, development, and optimization of braking system application software in compliance with reliability and safety specifications.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and design control systems for electronic braking system and other mechatronics, electro-pneumatic and electrical smart systems, considering the integration of mechanical, electrical, electronic, and pneumatic components.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional electronics, mechatronics, and mechanical and functional safety teams to specify system requirements and functionality.
  • Write custom control logic and algorithms to achieve precise control and performance optimization.
  • Utilize simulation tools to create mathematical models of product systems, allowing real-time simulations to test and validate control strategies, tuning parameters, and safety measures, refining algorithms as needed.
  • Ensure software and systems comply with safety standards (e.g., ISO 26262)
  • Perform risk assessments and implement safety protocols.
  • Conduct MIL (model in the loop), SIL (Software in the loop) and support HIL (hardware in the loop) testing and vehicle level validation of control systems to ensure they meet performance and quality standards.
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues in electro-mechanical and electro-pneumatic systems.
  • Develop maintenance procedures and schedules to ensure system reliability.
  • Create detailed technical documentation, including system schematics, wiring diagrams, and user manuals.

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in designing and programming control systems for mechatronics, electro-pneumatic, or electrical systems, motors, and linear actuators, with a strong foundation in writing custom control logic and algorithms.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in designing and development of Braking controls software.
  • Experience in use of simulation software (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink).
  • Experience in programming using C, C++, and Python.
  • Proficient in vehicle dynamics plant modeling (SimScape, TruckSim, TruckMaker)
  • Prior experience in rapid prototype software development from concept to validation (requirements, design, testing)
  • Prior experience in production software development (SYS-SW development lifecycle)
  • Knowledge of electronics and electro-pneumatic components, and product development processes.
  • Familiarity with safety standards and regulations relevant to the product industry.
  • Exceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
