DESCRIPTION

We are looking for a talented Combustion and Emissions Systems Engineer to join our team specializing in Engineering for our Cummins Inc. facility in Columbus, IN.

In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:

  • Problem Solving : Investigate and resolve product, system, and technology issues related to thermal and fluid sciences, ensuring high-quality solutions and documentation.
  • Process Improvement : Apply and enhance processes like Pre-Program Planning (PPP) and Product Preceding Technology (PPT) to support decision-making and improve product quality.
  • Technical Expertise : Utilize advanced tools and software (e.g., GT-Power, Fluent, Converge) to conduct thorough analyses and simulations, driving innovation in combustion and emissions science.
  • Collaboration : Work closely with team members, technical managers, and other stakeholders to gather input, negotiate solutions, and deliver recommendations that support project goals.
  • Decision Making : Make informed decisions on project details, such as analysis and testing, to ensure successful project progression and high-quality outcomes.
  • Ownership : Take responsibility for resolving moderately complex technical issues, with increasing complexity as you gain experience, contributing to the overall success of projects.
  • Independent Execution : Execute established work processes independently while continuously developing your technical knowledge and improving systems and processes.
  • Team Contribution : Contribute effectively to team goals, influence workgroup dynamics, and coordinate tasks among technicians and temporary employees, fostering a collaborative and productive work environment.

RESPONSIBILITIES

To be successful in this role, you will need the following:

  • Statistical Analysis Skills : Ability to analyze technical data using statistical methods, including descriptive statistics, probability distributions, and hypothesis testing, to make data-driven decisions.
  • Product Verification and Validation : Skills in developing validation plans, managing product risk, and evaluating test results to ensure product capability and compliance with requirements.
  • Technical Documentation : Proficiency in documenting technical information and communicating it effectively to stakeholders to enhance productivity and knowledge transfer.
  • Project Management : Competence in planning, scheduling, and executing product development activities, while monitoring project progress and managing risks to meet quality expectations.
  • Control Systems Knowledge : Understanding of open/closed loop controls and the ability to specify and configure control system architectures for optimal product performance.
  • Thermodynamics and Energy Systems : Strong grasp of thermodynamics and energy conversion systems to predict and interpret the performance of various energy systems, aiding in system and component analysis.

These skills will help you excel in your role and contribute to the development of innovative, reliable, and efficient products.

Education, Licenses, Certifications:

College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.

Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.

This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.

Experience:

Entry level/Early career professional. Preferred candidates would have relevant experience working in either a temporary student employment environment (intern, co-op, or other extracurricular team activities) or as an early career professional in a relevant technical discipline area. Knowledge of MS Office tools is also preferred

QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Information:

  • Execution of testing, either on an engine dynamometer or vehicle, for data collection used to solve a problem or create a calibration
  • Individual may be licensed to drive commercial vehicles as part of test bed for data collection and evaluation
  • Ability to analyze data using tools such as Excel or Matlab and draw conclusions from the data
  • Experience working in engine dynamometer test cell
  • Would prefer prior experience in simulation tools such as GT Power, AVL Boost, Simulink, etc.
  • Knowledge or use of engineering calibration tools such as Calterm, INCA or CANape
