Job Summary
A Greenhouse Grower and Manager runs the daily operations of a greenhouse. They will hire, fire and train employees, work with the public or in business-to-business arrangements and they must be knowledgeable about the stages of plant life and diseases that may occur. The job mainly involves overseeing the cultivation of plants within a controlled greenhouse environment, to include seed propagation, plant care, pest management, environmental monitoring, staff supervision, and ensuring quality standards are met, with the goal of producing plants for retail sales; they are responsible for managing all aspects of greenhouse operations, from plant selection and propagation to inventory control, while adhering to environmental regulations and maintaining efficient production practices.
Job Responsibilities
- Establish the production plan for the year and ensure that all perennials and annuals are grown to the highest quality standards in the most economical, efficient, and environmentally friendly manner.
- Generate accurate crop forecast.
- Monitor incoming plugs and perform quality checks to ensure plugs are handled and planted properly.
- Develop and document high quality standards with the goal of crop consistency.
- Conduct trials and experiments to evaluate possible improvements to the crops.
perform soil, water, and disease tests as needed. - Plan and manage the varieties and quantities of annuals/perennials indicated in the production plan on a schedule that provides a continuous supply of product available for sale.
- Ensure the excellent health and growth of plants including proper watering, fertilization, pruning, spacing, spraying, integrated pest management (IPM), and temperature control.
- Apply pesticides, chemicals and biologicals as required for maintaining crop health through designed "spray programs".
- Oversee such programs are carried out effectively while maintaining proper records for spraying and fertilizing.
- Train and supervise all associates in growing, irrigation, plant care and maintenance.
- Plan and organize the incoming shipments and ensure that orders are in good condition, labeled, packed, and arrive in accordance with the schedule.
- Manage goods, materials, supplies, and equipment required for the greenhouse production and delivery processes.
- Ensure that all buildings, structures, and equipment are properly utilized and maintained.
- Forecast scheduling, hiring, training, evaluating, and developing employees.
- Ensure the safety of employees through compliance with Environmental and Health and Safety regulations and maintaining an attitude that all incidents are preventable.
- Ensure good working order of greenhouse spaces. Familiarity with features such as cooling walls, heating, fans, manual ventilation, and irrigation is needed. You must be willing to learn the operations of these to proactively ensure good working order.
Job Requirements
- Minimum two years of hands-on, relevant horticultural work experience required
- Customer service experience
- Ability to hire and train new employees

- Ability to stand for long periods of time
- Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds
- Ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, climb, balance
- Ability to work in outdoor environment, including exposure to heat, cold, humidity & allergens
- Must be able to work with hand/power tools
- May be required to perform tasks at varying heights requiring ladders
- Manual dexterity
- Hearing and visual acuity including close, distance, color, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus
- Regularly works outdoors and in a greenhouse in both hot and cold conditions
- Frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions
- Occasionally exposed to risk of fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals (appropriate PPE will be provided)
