Position Overview

Coordinates activities of the Central Lab Quality Control Department with a primary objective of delivering a high quality, cost effective, uniform product that is consistent, repeatable and that meets the specifications and expectations of our suppliers and customers. In addition, this position provides support with technical mix knowledge, participates in achieving department goals, and quality standards by understanding product, manufacturing capability and customer requirements.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties and Functions)
  • Ensure employees are working and promoting safety at all times through daily, weekly and monthly communications, on the job training and by taking a leadership role and participating in a safety culture.
  • Ensure all HMA designs are being tested and reported utilizing the most current and appropriate standards, specifications and internal procedures
  • Evaluate the physical attributes and properties of raw material currently or potentially being used at our plants and provide results and feedback as required
  • Responsible for maintaining an up to date Quality Systems manual which requires scheduling calibrations, standardizations, checks and maintenance of the laboratory equipment according to MDOT, AASHTO R-18 and all internal audits
  • Ensure all lab technicians are aware of and comply with company, government and customer policies, procedures and regulations including housekeeping, behavioral expectations, safety and environmental stewardship
  • Ensure all lab technicians are trained and are continuously updated on any changes to specifications and maintaining certifications required by MDOT, Local Agencies and FAA
  • Attend QC managers meeting, scheduling meetings and aggregate supplier meetings
  • Attend pre-pave and pre-production meetings as required
  • Support for Regional QC Managers and lab technicians
  • Schedule and manage daily task and be prepared to provide direction and support in all areas including plant lab support
  • Prioritize all demands for design request and communicate with QC team, project managers and customers the status of designs
  • Analyze all test data, accurately complete and submit all mix design forms and update shared drive with all approved designs
  • Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving and adhering to company policies in all work environments and areas


Other Responsibilities
  • Understand internal and external customer expectations

  • Continuous education of HMA
  • Work collaboratively across the organization to achieve shared objectives


Qualifications
  • Three to five years' experience in design and construction industry related to asphalt and civil construction
  • Strong computer skills (web, email, MS Excel, MS Word, various others)
  • Strong communication skills, ability to communicate professionally to a wide varied audience and network within the organization
  • Technical asphalt mix knowledge including types, sizes, and appropriate applications
  • Successful completion of HMA QA/QC certification course
  • Successful completion of MDOT required HMA mix design certification
  • Preferred BS in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or comparable industry experience

Physical Requirements

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be considered.
  • Work may be performed in a laboratory setting and outside on a job site. Physical requirements include lifting buckets that weigh up to 40 pounds, sitting, standing, walking, bending, twisting, working with hot objects
  • Majority of the work is conducted in a lab setting. May also be required to go to another division or off-site for gathering materials, to provide support to plant labs and occasionally for meetings.


Work Environment
  • This position will work the majority of the time in a lab setting but may also on occasions work outdoors at a quarry / aggregate pit and at an Asphalt Plant. Also requires attending pre-production meetings at MDOT regional offices. Work environment will vary depending on job task.
