Summary:
The Lab Assistant I performs positive patient identification Receives specimens into the lab reception area, inputs specimen information into laboratory information system and conducts patient/client registration as necessary. Makes determinations for specimen collection containers and volumes based on patient weight and performing laboratory. Maintains specimen integrity during specimen transport, and processing of samples received in the laboratory. Communicates specimen issues to caregiver. Provides customer service by greeting visitors, answering the telephone, transferring phone calls, faxing results, and assisting with specimen requirements. Performs other clerical or clinical duties as required by area of service. Patients served at Cook Children's range in age from newborn through the adolescent period. All Laboratory personnel are required to follow Cook Children's Compliance Policy, Code of Conduct, and the Clinical Laboratory Compliance Plan. Laboratory and Corporate Compliance, as outlined by the OIG and HCFA is an important aspect of our laboratory's environment, and each employee is expected to be knowledgeable of, and behave in accordance with the Laboratory and Cook Children's Compliance Plans. These job functions are performed with a professional, courteous and knowledgeable manner towards physicians, management, nurses, co-workers, and other customers of Cook Children's Healthcare System.

Qualifications:
- High School graduate or GED required.
- Preferred one (1) year phlebotomy experience, pediatric experience preferred.
- Specimen processing experience required.
- Certification preferred but not required.
