Staff Software Engineer, SRE / Staff Site Reliability Engineer
As a Staff Site Reliability Engineer, you will balance the role of an individual contributor while also anchoring new projects, leading technical direction and mentoring other engineers on the team. You'll be critical to helping engineering teams at Coinbase design, deploy, and manage reliable software across all our development and production environments.
Your primary responsibilities will center around deep systems engineering and optimization - helping debug performance issues that negatively impact reliability, and defining our performance and reliability roadmaps for the team, and across the stack.
You will work with engineering teams to set service-level objectives, improve observability, ensure production readiness, optimize service and system performance and facilitate incident response. What you’ll be doing (i.e. job duties):
- Diving Deep into Linux Internals to identify performance issues with third party node client software, and developing strategies to address
- Act as a champion of reliability in the organization, and provide firepower and guidance to key partner teams to ensure reliability across the entire stack.
- Work closely with management and stakeholders to define strategic roadmaps and balance reliability, cost and feature tradeoffs
- Prioritize elimination of common operational issues in order to reduce operational TOIL and KTLO themes
- Manage individual projects priorities, deadlines and deliverables with your technical expertise
- Mentor and train other team members on design techniques and coding standards
- Embed with Engineering teams to teach and demonstrate industry best practices
- Improve observability, define and measure SLOs
- Facilitate incident response and conduct root cause analysis
- Automate operational tasks
- Help partners design and implement reliable system architectures
What we look for in you:
- You have at least 8 years of combined experience in backend software or infrastructure
- You’ve experienced architecting and developing solutions to ambiguous problems with significant impact
- Strong skills around observability, debugging and performance tuning
- Strong communication skills and ability to explain technical concepts clearly and simply
- Strong interpersonal skills working with Engineers from junior to principal levels
- Demonstrated critical thinking under pressure
- A willingness to dive into understanding, debugging, and improving any layer of the stack
Nice to haves:
- Experience working directly with blockchains and protocols
- Familiarity with working in rapid growth environments
- Experience in Ruby, Go, and Terraform
- Experience with AWS, GCP, Azure, or other cloud environment
- Experience designing and building reliable systems
- Experience working in a highly regulated environment
- Experience writing company-facing blog posts and training materials
- Crypto-forward experience, including familiarity with onchain activity such as interacting with Ethereum addresses, using ENS, and engaging with dApps or blockchain-based services
