Job Summary

The Manager, Work Equipment is responsible for ensuring the reliable operation and maintenance of CN's fleet of equipment used by Engineering personnel to maintain road lines. Main tasks include stabilizing costs through standard practices and procedures, implementing system-wide best practices, communicating a common strategy across the system, and driving consistency in work equipment operations.

Main Responsibilities

Safety

• Ensure safety, compliance and enforcement focused
• Manage day-to-day operations of assigned shops or territory and responsible for leading assigned unionized and management staff to ensure maintenance and repair work on CN equipment is performed safely and efficiently
• Provide a safe work environment based on consistent policies, procedures, and training methodologies

Maintenance Programs

• Provide reliable equipment fleet through consistent maintenance and repair processes
• Provide the most reliable equipment fleet through consistent maintenance and repair processes

Scheduling

• Ensure equipment availability to end user meets program schedules and track maintenance requirements

Budget and Staff Management

• Stabilize overall operating costs for equipment repair and maintenance by implementing unit cost analysis by equipment type
• Monitor cost of labour, inventory, and materials to ensure cost control and asset utilization are implemented
• Understand and control each cost center's monthly and annual budgets
• Build, maintain and motivate an effective team

Working Conditions

The role is a combination of office and outdoors work in various types of weather and environmental conditions. The incumbent must be available to work shifts and weekends when necessary and to respond to critical incidences. The position requires to travel for company business, at times without advance notice. The incumbent must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure and manage stress. The role requires regular travel (50%) without notice.

Requirements

Experience

Cost Control and Budget Management
• Minimum 7 years of experience in cost control and budget management
o Experience managing a unionized team

o Experience in regulatory and safety environment
o Experience in managing a unionized workforce (e.g. understanding collective bargaining agreements, response to grievances)

Any experience for these above would be considered as an asset

Education/Certification/Designation

• High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
• Post-Secondary Education

• United States Operating Rules (USOR) or Canadian Rail Operating Rules (CROR) qualified (based on location)
• Process Improvement Training such as Six Sigma, Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve, and Control (DMAIC), Sort, Set in Order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain (5S), Kaizen or Lean

Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset

Technical Skills/Knowledge

• Knowledge of mechanical engineered equipment capacity, reliability, and safety
• Knowledge of Microsoft Office
• Knowledge of Supply, Application, and Products (SAP)
• Preventative Maintenance Planning such as Project Management (PM) scheduling
• Knowledge of equipment operation and scheduling as well as prioritizing repairs

• Financial ability to assess both major and minor purchases but also be able to assess economics of leasing options
Any knowledge for any of the above would be considered as an asset
