Canadian National Railway Company (CN) is looking for a highly motivated person to fulfill a full-time (40h/week) Intern, Developer Performance Analytics position in Montreal, QC from May - August 2025.

Job Summary
The Intern, Developer Performance Analytics is responsible for supporting the Network Operations team by performing ad hoc analysis and developing automated reports to drive business objectives. The role provides technical expertise on CN data, including train, car, and locomotive movement and developing new measures as required. Moreover, the incumbent works closely with business users to identify requirements and collaborates on technical approaches to quickly fulfill business needs. The role takes full responsibility of assigned deliverables and focus on key tasks in order to deliver as per service commitment

Major Responsibilities

  • Develop high quality code to simplify long-term maintenance and iterative development processes
  • Develop custom tools, websites and automated reports using reporting software and tools (e.g., Tableau, Power BI, DataIKU)
  • Complete Regulatory compliance reports
  • Develop strong data mining techniques to answer specific questions from Network Operations or other groups
  • Provide insight based on the data, along with recommendations of course of action
  • Prepare trend analysis
  • Understand CN's Key Operating Metrics, along with the processes used in their creation to become a Subject Matter Expert (SME)
  • Prototype new measures, developing the business rules and outputs
  • Work with Information and Technology (I&T) to implement changes to measures and I&T supported system
  • Assist internal and external users with CN Data
  • Learn about CN Data, reports, and metrics, and suggest improvements
  • Direct users to existing reports that match new requests
  • Understand how metrics are calculated, processed, and how they relate to historical trends

Requirements

  • Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Access)
  • Demonstrated ability to learn independently and adapt quickly to changing demands, while taking initiative to identify opportunities for improvements and drive results
  • Advanced level skills in Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Looks for opportunities for continuous improvement and takes initiative
  • Strong academic foundation with a genuine interest in sustainable solutions and supply chain management
  • Proficiency in analytical thinking, problem-solving, and the ability to approach challenges creatively
  • Adaptability to a fast-paced environment and capacity to manage multiple tasks effectively
  • Initiative and eagerness to learn both from industry professionals and independently
  • Knowledge of Relational Database Management Systems (RDBMS), Systems Applications and Products (SAP), and Business Objectives (BO)
  • Knowledge of software development (e.g., VBA)
  • Knowledge of Python, R, database development (e.g., Transact-SQL and PL/SQL),
  • Familiarity with ColdFusion Markup Language (CFML) and Visual Studio
  • Knowledge of Tableau, PowerBI, DataIKU or other self service analytic tools
  • Knowledge of ETL process*

Education

  • Working towards a Bachelor's Degree in Technology, Science, Engineering or Logistic
