Job Summary

The Engineer Track Designer or Track Designer is responsible for creating track designs, developing new track alignments, redesigning yard layouts, and reviewing track designs prepared by consultants and third parties. The role supports internal customers including Design and Construction (D&C), Public Works, Engineering Track and Zone, Business Development, Marketing, and Transportation. Furthermore, the incumbent is required to work with external customers including CN customers and governmental agencies.

Main Responsibilities

• Create track designs using Computer-Aided Design Software (AutoCAD)
• Use Google Maps and other programs to review existing track layouts in order to resolve options available for track additions, modifications, and expansions
• Update existing drawings, plans, standard plans, and schematics as needed in AutoCAD
• Conduct site inspections to collect field data for new track layouts
• Review proposed track designs to ensure conformance with CN standards
• Assist in developing track designs
• Review and comment on track designs provided by internal and external customers
• Develop track design alternatives including shoo-fly's to accommodate temporary track alignments, track outages, and other emergent conditions
• Review proposed design changes and shop drawings
• Review plans to ensure clearance requirements are met

Working Conditions

The role is primarily performed in an office environment with a regular workweek from Monday to Friday with occasional meetings on-site to review projects in the field in various types of weather and environmental conditions. The position is occasionally required to work on varying shifts to cover operations that run 24/7, including weekends and holidays and must be available on-call 24/7 to respond to critical incidents. The incumbent is required to walk on uneven ground, climb up steep embankments, and walk long distances. Due to the nature of the role, the incumbent must be able to meet tight deadlines, handle pressure, and stress. The role requires occasional travel (up to 25%) within Canada and the United States (U.S.) with the potential to be away for periods of time depending on the projects being delivered.

Requirements

Experience

Track Design
• Minimum 4 years of experience in railroad track design
o Experience with surveying and utilizing site surveys to develop track designs
o Experience with AutoCAD and drafting
o Demonstrated experience delivering project schedules
o Experience with design of railroad track infrastructure, including track alignments, turnout design, yard track design, and proper drainage requirements

Education/Certification/Designation

• High School Diploma or General Educational Development (GED)
• Valid Driver's License
• Bachelor's Degree in Civil or Construction Engineering
• Professional Engineer Designation (P.Eng.)
Any designation for these above would be considered as an asset. Please note for Engineer, Track Designer, the candidate must have the preferred requirements.
