Agency Description

The Philadelphia Water Department is a municipal department of approximately 2500 employees working in all facets to provide water/wastewater treatment services to the City of Philadelphia and the surrounding counties.

Philadelphia Water Department (PWD) is a municipal department with approximately 2500 employees which provides water and wastewater treatment and services for the City of Philadelphia and some surrounding counties. The Green Stormwater and Stream Design (GSSD) Design Group is responsible for implementing the City of Philadelphia’s Green City, Clean Waters program. The objective of the Ecological Restoration (ER) Design team within the GSSD Unit is to develop and grow an integrated infrastructure resilience program utilizing the holistic natural channel design methods to ensure the ongoing regulatory compliance. The ER Design Group advances the ability to implement stream restoration and wetland creation/enhancement projects on public property and within the Public Right of Way by developing construction documents (construction documents, details, cost estimates, and specifications), creating design resources and standards, and providing technical support to other units within the Department.

Job Description

The candidate selected will provide support to a multidisciplinary team of engineers, landscape architects, city planners, and scientists in the ER team with ongoing design efforts to improve the streams and protect streamside PWD infrastructure. Typical tasks and responsibilities are varied but include a combination of field and desk assessments in addition to project management support, budget and schedule tracking, writing or proofreading guidance and manuals, checking engineering cost estimates and calculations, reviewing design drawings at different phases prepared by consultants in AutoCAD, communicating with construction inspectors, documenting ER projects in active design and construction. Other tasks may include data entry/analysis/visualization using GIS/ArcMap, and research into new engineering materials and techniques. This co-op position will provide you with the opportunity to: · Gain first-hand experience in implementing a billion-dollar sustainable engineering initiative from conception to completion · Gain exposure to many different groups at PWD, including GSI Planning, Compliance Assurance, Environmental Restoration, Construction, Maintenance, and Monitoring · Help improve the quality of rivers and streams and create green spaces in the City of Philadelphia · Work collaboratively with dedicated professionals and other co-ops · Grow your technical understanding of engineering and design principles to enhance your future career

Essential Functions

Classes in civil engineering, environmental engineering, water resources engineering, hydrology, hydraulics, project management, landscape design, environmental engineering, and/or site design preferred. Candidates should have an interest in green stormwater infrastructure. Must have a willingness to learn new software and spend time in the field. AutoCAD, Microsoft Office, PDF Editing Programs, basic GIS, and/or database experience a plus. Must have valid driver's license. Civil or Environmental Engineering, Environmental Sciences majors preferred.

Competencies, Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Applicants are required to meet the following minimum requirements:

- Must be enrolled as a full-time student

-  Valid driver’s license preferred, though a personal vehicle is not required.
