Agency Description 

The Philadelphia Streets Department and the divisions within it are responsible for the City's vast network of streets and roadways. Included among many duties are the ongoing collection and disposal of residential trash and recyclables, as well as the construction, cleanliness and maintenance of our entire street system.  

The Streets Department's mission is to provide clean, green, and safe streets in a cost-effective and efficient manner. The department delivers a number of City services that are critical to maintaining the public health and safety in our communities. These essential services include, but are not limited to, curbside trash and recycling collection, maintaining all traffic control devices and street lighting, the construction and maintenance of 320 bridges and 2,525 miles of streets and highways and snow and ice removal.  

Job Description

Position Summary 

This is a workforce development program. One day per week will be spent in a classroom, receiving training in soft skills, which will prepare candidates for careers. The remaining four days will be spent in the neighborhood beautification program. Work assignments may vary and include working outdoors in various climate and temperature extremes such as cold and high heat and humidity. The primary work assignment will be assisting with neighborhood beautification tasks throughout the City to make Philadelphia a cleaner place to live and work. These projects, though rewarding, require strenuous physical activity in difficult and challenging environments. An intern of the program will frequently be lifting and carrying 30 – 40 lbs. Additional optional assignments could include the use of a jackhammer, which can weigh up to 90 lbs. 

Employees will have the opportunity to be hired in a full time civil service capacity at the completion of the workforce development program. 

 

Essential Functions 

The essential functions of this job include, but are not limited to, neighborhood beautification. This involves cleaning illegal trash dumping sites throughout the City. Employees will also clean in alleyways throughout the City, and will need to be prepared and work safely.
