Position Summary
The Senior Campaign Director (SCD), will contribute to City of Hope's vision by supporting and role modeling a commitment to adhering to disciplined, key processes and programs that sustain an office-wide focus on collaboration, efficiencies and metrics-based outcomes. By providing strong individual contribution and high-level strategic partnership, The Senior Campaign Director will be a part of creating our evolution into a perpetually campaign-ready, donor-centered, leading industry program to support City of Hope's mission. In pursuit of this outcome, we are committed to growing careers within the Office of Philanthropy to attract and retain the most talented professionals in the country, and excel as a highly collaborative, efficient and creative team. The TAP initiative ensures that the Office of Philanthropy is poised to move quickly, effectively and efficiently to maximize opportunities on behalf of City of Hope.
Reporting to the Chief Strategic Initiatives & Campaign, this position will support the stand up of a comprehensive campaign team. The Senior Campaign Director will provide ongoing counsel and leadership to the Senior Vice President, Campaign Strategic Initiatives and to the SEDOD-Campaign Strategic Initiatives, the Office of Philanthropy as well as enterprise leadership regarding the overall design and execution of the campaign. With attention to campaign design, communications and donor experience strategies, The Senior Campaign Director will contribute to building institutional capacity and effectiveness.
Initially assigned to support the Orange County campaign efforts, the SCD also will support additional emerging initiatives such as Precision Medicine that will ultimately support a comprehensive campaign for City of Hope. This will include participating in all elements of initiative design and campaign vision discussions and planning and in collaborative work with the cross-functional teams assigned to each strategic initiative.
The Senior Campaign Director will work collaboratively with each cross-functional team (e.g. the Orange County team and Precision Medicine teams at the outset) to accomplish campaign objectives. In this role, The Senior Campaign Director will drive execution of the campaign design and operating plan, working closely with the Campaign Architect, SEDOD-Campaign Strategic Initiatives and OOP partners to establish and drive plan goals, milestones and deliverables.
The Senior Campaign Director will design appropriate phasing of campaign activities and goals. As an active participant in portfolio design and growth conversations, the SCD will assist with related report/summaries and written strategies for identified donors and outcomes. The Senior Campaign Director will ensure campaign operational efficiency and effectiveness and be responsible for programmatic components including creation of accountability metrics and dashboards, reporting, standards, implementation of best practices, communications, initiative design and management that are congruent with Office of Philanthropy standards and practices.
Working closely with fundraiser(s) The Senior Campaign Director will bring together stakeholders to discuss prospect strategies and progress towards initiative/campaign goals.
The Senior Campaign Director will support OOP leadership in the recruitment, training, engagement, and management of identified campaign volunteer leadership. This will include volunteer committee structure design and implementation, engagement in the recruitment process, oversight and management of the campaign committees, including the development of agendas, briefing staff and volunteers prior to committee meetings; and development of presentation and meeting materials and formulating/implementing next steps. The Senior Campaign Director may serve as a primary point of contact and, in collaboration with Philanthropy leads for each initiative, prospect relationship managers/prospect plan managers, manage/support the campaign participation of volunteers. As desired, The Senior Campaign Director may actively cultivate volunteers to participate in campaign-related fundraising efforts.
Key Responsibilities include:
- Direct Oversight of Assigned Campaign Initiatives
- Provide excellent project management, including setting project objectives, identifying and addressing issues, and securing required resources. Identify process steps and milestones, and adjust action plans to achieve desired outcomes. Ensure project execution and outcome achievement.
- Establishes the strategy and direction of special campaign initiatives under the direction of the Campaign leadership (including the Campaign Architect; SVP-CSI; SEDOD-CSI). Develops, within the framework and context of City of Hope campaign management tools, project planning and tracking tools, functions and reports for campaign strategic initiatives assigned that support OoP's comprehensive campaign, with direct focus, initially, on the Orange County and Precision Medicine campaign initiatives
- Provide long-range planning and analysis, ensuring that appropriate systems, methodologies, and processes are implemented to provide accurate, timely information to COH and OOP leadership and fundraising staff. Build out gift range tables, gift opportunities and strategies. Work closely with prospect management colleagues on tracking, trends analysis and prospect management tools. Manage, update and maintain data to compile relevant reports, summaries, and briefing materials and make recommendations to the Campaign Architect, SEDOD and Initiative leadership.
- As a "manager by influence," establish and sustain alignment with OC leadership to ensure that campaign practices, strategies (metrics, goals, outcomes, and strategic priorities) are congruent with Office of Philanthropy standards and practices. Understand and utilize process management tactics (negotiation skills, triple constraint, business relationship management principles to support collaborative teamwork to drive the identification of "people", "process" and "system" capabilities required to move initiatives forward.)
- Develop sufficient level of understanding of all initiatives within the campaign and develop a strong broad/horizontal communication pattern across OC leadership, staff, donors, volunteers and high- level clients to tie in dependencies and synergies among initiatives and projects.
- Develop, drive and manage a comprehensive campaign constituent engagement plan for assigned campaign initiatives with initial focus on the Orange County and Precision Medicine campaign initiatives to align with the comprehensive campaign plan. Maintain oversight of the ongoing campaign engagement calendar for the Orange County, Precision Medicine and other assigned initiatives. Ensure execution/execute all logistics and strategies around identified constituent engagement workstreams and events with a critical attention to detail in collaboration with leadership, colleagues and volunteers on all key elements.
- Interface with institutional-wide stakeholders to ensure cross-collaboration and resource integration. Additionally, engage in relationship building with donors, volunteer leadership, and key stakeholders to sustain momentum, buy-in and commitment to support the campaign.
- Recruit and manage high level volunteers as required in support of campaign activities and fundraising and in collaboration with OOP leadership.
- Convene, coordinate, and attend campaign planning meetings, retreats, and training sessions. Facilitate presentations and large-scale educational sessions and meetings.
- Responsibilities for campaign operations include but are not limited to program and volunteer management, the development of analytics and progress reports, and the implementation of internal and external communications efforts.
- Facilitate long term campaign planning and implementation for initiatives assigned, with particular focus on campaign management.
- Serve as a role model for the Office of Philanthropy
- Act as a strategic and visionary leader in representing the Office of Philanthropy with City of Hope colleagues and external partners.
- Act as spokesperson for City of Hope activities, as requested.
- Demonstrate an ability to solve problems, overcome hurdles and navigate sensitive issues with discretion, tact and strong communication skills.
- Possess a thorough knowledge of the key fundraising priorities for COH.
- Participate in committees, task forces and other special projects as requested.
- Must have a Bachelor's Degree.
- Experience may substitute for minimum education requirements.
- Must have at least 5 years of managerial/leadership experience in campaign management, events management, or philanthropic consulting.
Preferred education experience and skills:
- Masters in similar field (preferably healthcare administration, business or public health)
- Strong understanding of the issues, nuances and needs of research, teaching and clinical operations in a complex health sciences research and/or research university environment.
- Demonstrated track record in a fundraising operations or campaign management role in the context of a comprehensive or initiatives-based campaigns
- Excellent computer skills.
- Strong organizational skills to effectively manage multiple projects from inception to completion, adhering to deadlines, within budget, quality and desired outcomes/metrics.
- Demonstrated skill in researching and evaluating information, preparing concise, well-organized reports, summaries, correspondence, policy documents and personalized letters.
- Proven experience creating and delivering clear/concise communications, and an ability to speak and document in a summarized fashion.
- Advanced knowledge of practices and procedures associated with building and maintaining effective working relationships with all levels of volunteers, as well as internal and external constituencies.
- Ability to establish professional working relationships and interact effectively with diverse groups having competing interests and priorities within the enterprise and community.
