Your Role:

As a Software Engineer within our Pet Portal development team, your time will be spent be architecting and building scalable user experiences with a hard-working group of front-end and back-end engineers, product managers, and business leaders. You will own building new features that will directly impact millions of customers and their furry family members every day within a fully Agile environment. Software Engineers within our Pet Portal organization play a hands-on role in driving innovation, scalability and maintainability, as well as in resolving critical development issues. Most importantly, you will serve as a leader and mentor, earning the trust and respect of those around you, from fellow engineers to technology leadership.

 Responsibilities:

  • Apply algorithms, data structures, and design patterns to produce efficient and performant code
  • Build Rest / GraphQL APIs and Kafka event streams to provide access to aggregated person level data and insights
  • Mentor junior Team Members to level up their skills in accordance with industry and Chewy standard methodologies
  • Make meaningful contributions to the team's existing service architecture, data architecture, dev-ops, and infrastructure as code, deployment pipelines, and public cloud services as part of a software development team
  • Develop, extend, and debug code within the scope of their team's existing tools and services
  • Solve root causes of and solutions for bugs and production issues
  • Will contribute to team's standard methodologies for logging, testing, instrumentation, metrics, monitors, alerts, practices, and processes
  • Participate in on-call rotations and operational excellence
  • Participate in discovery and design exercises collaborating with technical and business partners
  • Participate in the team's Agile practice attending and contributing to related ceremonies

 Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Computer Information Systems, or similar; or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of professional experience as Software Engineer
  • Strong Java development skills and in-depth knowledge of a least one Java framework such as Spring Boot or Micronaut
  • Experience working with event driven architectures and sound understanding of at least one event streaming solution (Kafka, SNS, etc.)
  • Hands-on experience in designing, building, and deploying scalable, highly available systems
  • Experience authoring, deploying, and supporting APIs at production scale
  • Experience with Big Data Technologies
  • Experience with SQL and NO SQL
  • Proficiency in Computer Science fundamentals - object-oriented design, data structures, algorithm - design, problem solving, and complexity analysis
  • Exceptional communication and leadership skills
  • The position may require travel

Preferred:

  • Experience in e-commerce or healthcare
  • Experience with configuration and deployment management and be hands on technology infrastructure, network, compute, storage, and virtualization experience
  • Experience with data analysis/mining in large scale database environments a plus
  • Experience managing infrastructure as code with tools like Terraform
  • Experience working with at least 1 cloud computing platform, preferably AWS
