Our Opportunity:

Chewy is seeking a hard-working and top-tier Senior Builder to join our in-house creative production studio in Plantation, FL! Reporting to the Art Department Manager, the Senior Builder will deliver set design, lifestyle set construction, and custom builds in support of our photo, video, and event productions.

As a Senior Builder you will collaborate closely with Spatial Designers to optimally translate creative concepts and designs into actionable construction plans, material selections, finishes, and assembly techniques. Your role will involve constructing sets from conception to completion, ensuring outstanding quality and meticulous attention to detail. We prioritize using a diverse range of materials to achieve the desired aesthetic while considering partner preferences.

The Senior Builder is a skilled and experienced individual who can independently implement moderate-visibility projects while also collaborating successfully. Your expertise in carpentry and set fabrication will be instrumental in driving the success of our creative initiatives.  

What You’ll Do:

  • Implement multiple overlapping short and long-form build projects of moderate scope within guidelines set by the Art Department Manager with limited oversight and approval. 
  • Lead a small group of builders and assistants delivering custom builds for mid-tier projects.
  • Break down assignments into actionable items, including to-do lists, construction plans, and materials lists 
  • Support other builders by tackling new projects in varying stages of completion. 
  • Work directly with peers and studio leadership team to assess build needs for both sets and studio.
  • Recommend workflow updates based on day-to-day project insights. 
  • Ensure all projects are constructed to correct speculations.  
  • Complete sophisticated painting, stain, and aging of sets. 
  • Review project specifications, drawings, and other relevant information to understand the scope and requirements of each project to support constructing materials estimate. 
  • Deliver detailed construction drawings and estimates based on AutoCAD designs.  
  • Supports all stages of set fabrication, custom builds, painting, and installation. 
  • Monitor material inventory levels and anticipate project needs to prevent delays or shortages. 
  • Prepare for creative direction developments and pivot as appropriate in response to direction. 
  • Ensure safety practices set by Chewy are always followed. 

What You’ll Need:

  • 4+ years of experience in art, production, video, photo, or theater with a focus on set design, carpentry, or fabrication. Experience as a foreman or assistant foreman is a plus.
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback positively and apply adjustments quickly and easily; understands the importance of autonomously applying feedback in a global and ongoing manner. 
  • Work with a sense of urgency, helping the team adhere to production timelines and schedules.  
  • Advanced skills working with a variety of materials including wood, plastic, fiberglass, Styrofoam, plexiglass, faux finishes, and joint compounds. 
  • Expertise in handling power tools while adhering to safety guidelines.
  • Advanced understanding of production, styling, and set construction process.
  • Advanced attention to detail, interpersonal skills, and time management abilities. 
  • Preferred software knowledge - Sketchup, AutoCAD, BobCAD, Excel, and SharePoint 
  • Experience as a key scenic or sculptor is a plus.
  • Active listener with a strong ability to think critically. 
  • A positive, can-do attitude. 
  • Receptive and flexible to changes in art department policy and procedure. 
  • Must be able to lift 50lbs and stand 8hrs. 
  • Position may require flexibility in work schedule including nights and weekends
  • Ability and desire to work in an environment with all pet types.  
  • Position may require 5% travel.
