The Risk Control & Value at Risk Analyst (VaR) performs market risk analytics, daily risk reporting, VaR modeling/analytics and correlation analysis for commodity transactions. This position is co-located with Supply & Trading (S&T) to provide commodity risk controls and related independent analysis and operates under the direction of Corporate Treasury. S&T buys, sells and supplies crude oil, refined products, natural gas, natural gas liquids and liquified natural gas to support Chevron’s crude and gas production operations and its refining and marketing network. Risk Control’s primary responsibility is to independently identify, measure, analyze and report the daily performance of S&T and ensure a controlled trading environment. Risk Control has support functions in the three major S&T trading hubs located in Houston, Singapore and London. Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to: 

  • Responsible for daily risk reporting of Chevron’s global trading portfolio. This includes:

    • Monitoring of transactions, P&L, net exposure, and Value at Risk (VaR) against authorized limits.

    • Analyze and identify P&L and exposure drivers of various trading books.

    • Daily analysis of the trading positions and VaR, on an aggregate portfolio basis down to the trading portfolio level.

    • Provide explanation and commentary for changes to risk profile, VaR, exposure and profit and loss.

    • Communicate and resolve risk metrics breaches appropriately and escalate through appropriate channels when necessary.

    • Ensure daily data integrity, validate exposures, and reconcile data inconsistencies with responsible traders.

  • Construct, analyze, validate, and maintain VaR models, stress tests, back-testing and scenarios.

  • Advise on the financial impact and risk exposure analysis of new strategies, activities, or transactions.

  • Develop standard forward curves and/or apply existing forward curve processes and methodologies for valuation of new commodities or markets traded.

  • Identify and troubleshoot issues in trading system data and work closely with IT to address problems.

  • Identify, develop, and implement system and process efficiencies across Chevron’s global trading and risk systems.

  • Build working relationships within the Chevron Trading organization (e.g. Front, Middle, Compliance, IT & Digital teams).

Required Skills & Qualifications:

  • 3+ years’ experience working in energy trading with a strong understanding of commodity trading, preferably in crude, gas and refined products markets.

  • Bachelors’ degree or equivalent work experience in Business, Finance, Mathematics or Engineering.

  • Prior experience in Risk Control/Management analyzing and reporting P&L and exposure for a broad range of energy products.

  • Understanding and experience with VaR, preferably with experience running VaR models and analysis.

  • Practical experience in the details of pricing methods for a broad range of complex instruments, including physical grades, futures, swaps and options.

  • Experience with using trade capture systems and familiarity with VaR models, preferably Endur and/or Solarc RightAngle trade systems and Algorithmics for VaR.

  • Demonstrated ability to validate and relate exposure, P&L and VaR results to commodity market drivers.

  • Proficient with Excel formulas, pivot table functionality, and trading database applications.

  • Ability to work collaboratively in a multi-discipline team environment on system and digital projects, troubleshooting issues, and drive changes as needed.

  • Possess strong organizational, communication, and presentation skills is critical.

  • Ability to synthesize complex topics and present appropriate level of details for the audience.

  • Demonstrates inclusive, collaborative work behaviors and supports, listens and respects the diversity and value of ideas from others.

  • Ability to work proficiently in a fast paced, open concept trading floor environment.

Preferred Skills & Qualifications:

  • Advanced degree in a quantitative field such as Physics, Mathematics or Engineering.

  • Prior experience with running VaR models at an energy trading or major financial institution.

  • Endur/Solarc Right Angle trade system experience.

  • Algorithmics VaR model experience.

Relocation Options:

Relocation will not be considered within Chevron parameters.

Selected candidate will work under the local payroll system and benefits.
