This position is in Upstream Law - Chevron North America Exploration and Production Negotiations and Legal Department (CNAEP Law), located in Houston Texas, that provides legal services to its North America Upstream exploration and production business units and headquarters groups. This position provides day-to-day advice on a broad range of upstream and commercial matters for clients in CNAEP headquarters and CNAEP business units, with a significant focus on royalty issues. The Counsel/Senior Counsel reports to the Managing Counsel of the CNAEP Cross Regional Support legal group in Houston.

Responsibilities for this position may include, but are not limited to:
Provide legal advice and counsel on U.S. legal and regulatory issues facing CNAEP, including: oil and gas, royalty matters, joint operations, pipelines, geophysical, commercial, compliance, and property rights
Represent the Company in negotiations with landowners/royalty owners, joint interest owners, contractors, suppliers, customers, and their legal counsel over exploration, production, land, gas sales/processing/transportation, and other agreements
Develop strategy and prepare comments on administrative rulemakings relating to royalty
Collaborate with and advise CNAEP business unit counsel, subject matter experts and other critical stakeholders to assure strategy alignment and achievement of business and transactional objectives
Respond to requests for royalty advice from, and collaborate on royalty strategy with, attorneys in other CNAEP Business Units; provide primary legal support to royalty client groups including CNAEP Production Services and Finance Shared Services
Provide legal advice and guidance on policy issues regarding legislation, regulations and rules promulgated by federal, state and local governments
Serve on industry committees/task forces that focus on royalty or exploration and production issues, as assigned
Draft, review and/or approve complex contracts across a full range of land, operations, procurement/supply chain, and commercial matters
Participate on internal teams and committees, as assigned
Offer general corporate and legal advice on compliance requirements, risk exposures and mitigation in areas such as antitrust, bankruptcy, corporate governance, employment, health, environmental and safety, information technology, procurement, public lands and policy
Partner with Enterprise Law Practice Groups, including Environmental and Safety Law and Litigation Management Unit, as appropriate
Required Qualifications:
Juris Doctor and Bachelor’s degrees are required, along with Texas Bar membership or compliance with the Texas Bar's requirements for in-house practitioners in Texas
A minimum of 5 years' experience as a practicing attorney; prior in-house experience preferred
Upstream oil and gas legal experience (preferably 5+ years), including experience in complex royalty matters, drafting, negotiating, and closing oil and gas transactions and providing legal advice and counsel to clients
Demonstrated initiative, collaboration, and team work/customer relationship building experience
Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills; must communicate effectively across broad functional and organizational lines and with state and federal agencies or industry trade groups
High ethical standards and ability to maintain strict confidentially
Must be a highly motivated self-starter capable of working in a fast-paced team environment and collaborating with business clients, other in-house counsel, outside counsel and staff
