Enterprise and Operational Risk Management (EORM) is part of the Corporate Risk Management (CRM) department that forms the second line of defense at Charles Schwab. EORM enables The Charles Schwab Corporation's (CSC) purpose and vision by governing and continually improving enterprise and operational risk programs, including effectively challenging business processes to increase understanding, awareness, and mitigation of enterprise and operational risks and improve related risk-based decision making. Within EORM, the Enterprise Risk Management Strategy Governance (ES&G) team manages the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Policy and ERM Framework, including other related policies and standards, risk and regulatory learning, and change management; oversight of corporate policies and standards, risk metrics management, top-down and horizontal risk assessments, risk and control self-assessments, issue management, and adverse events escalation; and providing administrative and secretarial support to risk management committees covering operational risk and new products, the Global Risk Committee, Bank Management Risk Committee and Board Risk Committee.

Reporting to the Director, ES&G, this Senior Manager role will engage with an influence internal stakeholders to develop, implement and continuously improve Schwab's Issue Management Program. This Senior Manager will support regulatory and internal audit activities, including responding to requests, supporting examinations, and supporting understanding of Schwab's Issue Management Program. The Senior Manager core body of work includes, but not limited to executing the Issue Management strategy and roadmap, including technology enablement, program change management, end-to-end user acceptance testing (E2E UAT) for MyGRC changes and upgrades, perform adherence monitoring against the Issue Management Standard. The successful candidate will do this by partnering with EORM team members and key stakeholders across all lines of defense to execute and implement sound business processes.

What you are good at:

  • Support the Issue Management Program, with focus on program and process improvement, adherence monitoring, data integrity oversight, training and technology enablement
  • Lead the Issue Management Community of Practice, execute risk analysis activities to identify, evaluate, and bring awareness to themes and trends, contribute to issue reporting, and support assurance activities (i.e. testing, audits, and regulatory exams)
  • Execute strategic initiatives, supporting oversight of the RCSA environment, and drive interconnectivity with other ERM and risk programs
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders across Schwab to continuously improve and adhere to Issue Management Practices that effectively and sustainably elevate the program
  • Partner with risk technology team to sustain optimal performance of the Issue Management workflow and reporting through bug fixes, enhancements, and executing large scope initiatives.
  • Facilitate the processes for providing appropriate oversight of issues, including understanding the thematic drivers, root causes and material risks associated with issues
  • Collaborate across the risk program owner community to drive awareness of the unified risk management ecosystem, including the integration of Issues Management to assure effectiveness of risk management
  • Lead and support strategic, complex, and cross-functional initiatives focused on advancing or remediating gaps and deficiencies in the Issue Management program or other risk programs that materially impact Schwab's Issue Management environment
  • Own proactive communication on the current state and forward-looking expectations of Issue Management at Schwab, including internal issue reporting and external engagement with regulators
  • Evaluate the need for and provide the appropriate tools, resources, and guidance to support adherence with program requirements

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree or business equivalent
  • 5+ years of compliance, audit, and/or regulatory risk experience in financial services
  • Ability to take a broad view of the cross-functional perspectives, continuous process improvement, and operational discipline that contribute to sustainable Issue Management environments
  • Exceptional relationship management and influencing skills at all levels of the organization, with the ability to navigate complex and nuanced business and risk environments, while building trust and balancing diverse organizational priorities
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills, including comfort with senior management, regulator, and large audiences
  • Ability to act decisively in making solid, informed, judgement calls in response to programmatic and operational directives, including navigating optimal outcomes when faced with disagreement
  • Strategic thinker who can anticipate the implications and consequences of situations and take appropriate action to be prepared for possible contingencies
  • Displays confidence and conviction when discussing body of work, including promoting successes and owning opportunities for improvement
  • A resilient attitude towards adapting to change, a positive mindset, and a focus on long-term goals

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Strong working knowledge of Schwab's risk management principles
